Well this past week I have had the speedometer fluctuating erratically and gears changes going absolutely nuts. After reading posts on her I changed the AbS sensor and Vehicle Speed Sensor, reset the computer by disconnecting negative terminal for 5 mins and went for a drive. All seemed fine for a mile then issue started again.
So ensued more investigation and read about the water ingress issue. I had recently had the windscreen resealed for a cost of 100 dollars so guess the gem might be the issue. Looking around found some online ranging from 44 dollars to 250 for a genuine piece from auto parts cheap dot com.
As I'm unemployed these options where out and I started calling junkyards. Found one locally from exact same vehicle but a 98 versus my 97 and got the fuse box as well to play safe for 15 dollars. Plugged everything up same issue.
So called local ford place and asked if they could diagnose, yep 80 bucks. No problem as I was out of ideas. Same codes kept coming back.
Kudos to the head mechanic at the local ford as they found the wiring harness had fallen onto the exhaust manifold and burnt through. With wind it would short out causing the issue. They also found a broken earth wire in the door to body tube and fixed the disco light inside the car when the drivers door was open.
I will take the vehicle back to them now as they spent over 3 hrs on the vehicle and only charged me the 80 bucks.
So if you have the issue of the speedometer look at the wiring under the hood at the wiring.
