I have had this little JL 8w1v2 in the stock box and it worked alright I guess, but during the winter I used my friends 10" boss in a bandpass box and it was great, once his system got put in by me, I put my sub back (w1v2) it sounds like complete poop, and no matter what I do to the stereo settings it sounds really bad, what gives? its only a year old and its a JL! I have two of them and they both sound bad, I took one of them and pushed the cone up and down, it makes a scratching noise on the way back down, WHY!
Is my sub already blown?

possible signal crossed? did you check your rca's and the wiring in general to make sure nothing got bumped as you swapped out subs? is the scratching coarse or barely noticable

make sure the signals arent X'd like WHO said and make sure the sub is connected correctly with the wires going to the correct terminals....

Stock box??? You mean the one for the factory sub? If so that's the problem. It's the way wrong size. Every sub requires a specified amount of box volume. It varies by manufacturer and model line. Guaranteed if you find an online sub box calculator and put in all the specs for that JL, you will be surprised at what enclosure volume that sub needs verses what you need. Second thing is a band pass box will make a totally different frequency range that a sealed box cannot. You really need to find out what you want.. Sealed, ported/vented, or bandpass. Then you can find out what volume box you need for that sub in the type of box you need, if going vented or ported you need to know vent or port volume and size. From there you construct the right box for your needs. Like I have a Alpine type R 10" sub, in a vented box tuned to 27 hertz, running almost 2000 watts through it at 8ohms. It is insane!!! But as I was saying a sub us a sub. But the box us where the sub makes its magic. If you don't give the sub the box it needs you will not only make it sound like poop but often times you end up frying the sub trying to push it to do what you want. Trust me... Been there done that. Now I only do custom built enclosures. BTW CUSTOM BUILT BOXES AREN'T TOO EXPENSIVE EITHER!
