Just bought an 01 EB and have a couple Q's - Now with Pics

I just bought a high mileage 2001 (201K) EB 4x4 that "runs rough and has a miss at idle". I test drove it and it was as described. On the way home from the seller, it threw a CEL for misfire on #3. Pulled over, wiggled the coil and reset the CEL. The miss went 99% away and it drives great. I ordered new coils and will install them this weekend along with plugs and hopefully that issue will be solved. Now for the questions.

The truck has coils in the rear. I thought all the EB versions of these had air suspension. According to the Ford ETIS site, it has "standard suspension". So even if someone did a coil conversion, no biggie, however, there are no coils up front. All of the conversion kits I see show a coil over/strut going in up front and mine just has shocks. What is the consensus on running these with just the torsion bars and shocks? Isn't that how the non air susp trucks came from the factory? It feels a bit soft to me, so before I replace the shocks, I need to figure out what I want.

Where would the factory suspension compressor have been mounted?

Next, the driver's side seat heater is inop. The light does not come on when the button is depressed. I stuck my head under there real quick and noticed that one of the plugs is in fact unplugged, but couldn't readily see where it went. What does the heated seat module look like exactly and where is it mounted?

Thanks guys.

The factory air ride compressor is located right behind the passengers head light. You can see it with hood open.

when you do plugs and coils make sure you use a torque wrench and tighten to specs.

Yeah, damn aluminum heads. I use a TR on any and everything anymore. Seems everything I work on anymore is alum. Thanks.

If you need wiring diagrams of the seat heater circuit send me a private message with your e-mail address and I will send you copies

When you replace the coils and plugs, be sure to use lots of dielectric grease in the boot. It will help them last longer and keep the water from getting up in there.

Air ride versions do not have coil springs on the front. They use the torsion bars and an air shock.
If you want to get rid of the front air shocks, just yank them off and replace with 73-79 f-150 rear shocks. Then crank up the torsion bars a little to level the rig back out. I did that on my '98EB and it worked perfectly!
The aftermarket kits come with a coilover front shock, that is so you don't have to mess with the torsion bars.

Send me a PM if you want more info on swapping the front shocks and cranking the t-bars.

Thanks for the info. The front air springs are gone. It has regular shocks. I need to replace all the regular shocks that are on it because I think they are toast. Ill shoot you a PM. Thanks.

One more question. It has a factory roof rack, but there no crossbars. What type of crossbars came on there and what did they look like? I would assume ebay or any ford parts online would have them yes?

Check junkyards. They are just crossover rungs. Roof racks from 97-98 models are taller than the 99-02 models in order to allow for the vehicles to fit into a conventional garage opening. I would imagine they are all the same width so its up to you which route you go.

On my 2000 E.B. the front cross bar is different than the rear. The front is held in place by a thumb screw assembly, while the back ones can be moved by lifting levers built into the unit (one lever per side). I picked up an extra rear one at the local salvage yard for $10.00 so that I could distribute the loads better. There are also moveable tie down points. I picked up a few extra of those too (the yard didn't even charge me for those). I also repainted them and they look good.

There are at least one of the moveable tie down points on it already. I think we are going to hit the P&P's this weekend.
