i have a leak in my 98 expedition. Its in the pan that is right next to the oil pan toward the rear. What is this? tranmission pan maybe? it looks like its just leaking regular oil but not sure.

Well if it is closer to the back of the truck and attached to the bell housing, then yes it is the trans pan. Touch it with you finger, you should see a red tinge to it. It's probably just dirty from being on the outside of the trans.

Yeah most likely. If it isn't dripping on your driveway though, I would just leave it. Check your trans fluid once a month and call it good. It's not really worth the hassle or the money to pay someone to do it unless it is really leaking bad.

If it's not leaking enough to even form drips, it will take forever for it to actually drop a noticeable amount. However if you want the peace of mind, do the gasket. One thing you can do is clean the area and see how long it takes to get dirty again
