my 2006 expedition tells me I have 0 miles to empty, but when I go to the pump there are still 5 gallons in the tank. Thats a pretty big reserve. Is this common?

I do not have anything that tells me that readout in my 97 but I would venture to guess that is fairly common. The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel, so if it gets too low, you can burn out the pump. I am sure someone with a fuel level gauge in their truck will answer your question for sure but that would be my guess.

Our '07 and our '11 had/has similar issues. Sometimes it would be far more than 5 gallons, even. One thing you can try is to drain the tank, turn the key to "run" for about 30 seconds, then refill the tank. Alternatively, drive it until it runs out of gas. This recalibrates the "zero" on the tank level sending unit. Ford has had problems with tank levels drifting for quite some time. Recalibrating is a royal pain, though.

Safety cushion for sure. I always push mine and do the quick math based on what the avg mpg is showing for that tank, multiply by 30, then the difference between that and fill up will be "just about" what's left in the tank. It works for me...not suggesting you do this.

Our other cars have the gas can illumination, then the "red" you're dead....get gas NOW.

my expedition is perfect when the light comes on i have about 2-3 gallons left.

my '02 excursion on the other hand leaves 6-8 gallons when its flat on E an the miles to empty is at 0. it really ****** me off lol i'll try running it very very low and see if it "resets"
