This is straight up sexist bullsh•t.

I have known more than a few women who were fully capable of tearing down a block and rebuilding it.
I’ve also known more than a few men who fell for “blinker fluid.”

So next time, save the sexism for somewhere else.

Yeah, ok.... if that's where you wish to go, then let's talk FACTS. Walk into ANY shop and take a gander at what gender the mechanics are. Now do this a bunch of times to get an average. Just for fun, what do YOU believe the ratio of men vs. women in this profession will turn out to be?

I have a pretty good idea, as many of my friends and acquaintances work at shops and dealerships, wrenching all day long... they don't have too many gals as coworkers though, other than those shuffling papers in the offices!

Hell, even better, let's do a gender poll of all users who wrench on their Expys on this or on the F-150 forum, huh? ;)

Are there women who are knowledgeable about fixing cars and trucks? Sure... a very, very small portion of the general population, so small it's nearly negligible. It's by far the exception, not the rule. Manual labor has never been and never will be their forte, because biology doesn't care about "feelings". That thwat at the dealership knows as much about Ford trucks as Joe Biden and the rest of the DNC know about integrity.

The post was sexist. Period. And I will call a spade a spade.

As for calling "a spade a spade", that's actually considered a very RACIST remark against Black people, at least in these parts. I fully expect you to whip yourself in public and pray to the Gods of political correctness for forgiveness over this severe transgression! Oh, and "save the racism for somewhere else", will you?

What a f**king joke this thread turned into, lol! There must always be some SJW on a mission in every corner of the internet...

Sorry, but there's no way I can agree with recommending replacing alternators and some other parts as routine maintenance. I think you will find the majority of mechanics and Automotive world will not either.
You just don't replace an alternator until it fails are gives a problem. People don't replace alternators as routine maintenance item to preemptively replace it so it doesn't fail.

The alternator is one of those things that WILL leave you stranded in the worst possible moment and at the worst possible place (Murphy's law). With the severe winters we have out here, I will not gamble it.

My other car (2013 Explorer) blew an alternator last year at almost the same mileage as the Expy is at, just like that out of the blue... the dash lights for the charging system came on all of a sudden with a message to "pull over immediately" and the car started shutting down all systems while it was still in motion. I managed to make it limp to the nearby repair shop on what was pretty much remaining battery power. The 1/2 mile trip exhausted the battery so completely that I had no power steering by the time I parked it and the engine started misfiring... not a pleasant experience! Now imagine if this happened while crossing a bridge, on a freeway or in a snow storm...

When I had mine rebuilt, I went to a shop that I knew did good work through my contacts and the guy assured me that they put the highest quality rebuild kits (bearings, brushes, etc) that will last as long as the originals did. He confirmed that I was better off rebuilding my original factory alternator rather than buying a remanufactured one, which they also sell for the same price as the rebuild service.

I would tend to agree that something like a starter or fuel pump can be stretched till actual failure, but an alternator is critical while a vehicle is in motion... especially on modern cars. Alternators just tend to go out without warning, unlike most other parts. Plus when I removed it to bring it to the shop, I could feel the bearings in it starting to grind a little bit when turning the pulley by hand... so I think I caught it just in time.

$120 is cheaper than the cost of getting towed off a freeway out here, by the way.

;)

As to whether the commenter is sexist, I won’t (and didn’t) judge.

If it makes anyone feel better to think that I’m a “limp wristed metro-sexual manicured pretty boy...” or a “city slicker and soccer-dad who’ve never seen a dip stick, even their own cause their wife-man has em,” then I guess you do you. I know who I am.

Bottom line is that I will actively call out sexist behavior and comments, •even in a truck forum•, because some people don’t know any better. And even if the commenter thinks I’m any of the above, but someone else feels more accepted or realizes sexism in their own behavior and decides to work to improve, then I’ve done my job.

“Spade a spade...” !!?

You’re a racist! And Franklin Jones is a racist handle.

Shame shame missa Jones.

True about the tow! You have been rather unlucky with alternators. Lol
Most people don't have them go out on separate vehicles at similar miles.
Most cars will pop the batt light or let you know the voltage is low and if you turn everything off you can, you can go a good distance until battery gets too drained to keep fuel pump and ignition going.
I have had to kick lights to parking lights only before and speed up then lights on to maintain or coast to squeeze some more miles out of battery when an alt crapped out.
Fuel pumps aren't much different but they will usually be fine until you turn them off then no restart. Bad if you are far away!

120 isn't too bad for piece of mind if that gives it to you but you are swapping it yourself. So many people don't and get hosed for 400-600 for an alt replacement!
It is appalling what these shops will present you with.
I think I would rather buy a backup one-used, parts store, online..and get it tested and keep it in the back with tools to change. That way I could get every mile out of original and still have one to pop on if it failed.
OR get AAA or other roadside assistance and if it ever failed where I couldn't get back home, get towed to parts store and buy and put one on.
They have complete tool cart with all you need to swap it out.
I've never seen an alt go bad that the car couldn't be driven at least 10-15 mins (double in daytime without lights) on the battery after alt warning light came on.

Never buy a vehicle owned by female. They usually don't give a rip about maintenance. When something breaks, they go into a panic. I have niece, sister and cousin all with same attitude. The know nothing about cars and don't care. My cousin has had car after car, with problems. She now leased a Jeep...that is always in the shop. My sister destroys every car she has had, new and used. Her battery has died 8 times this past year. Her car has had, no oil in it. She broke the back window. She knocked the side view mirror off. I don't think she has ever washed it. In short, her favorite expression is 'it's only car'. The plugs should of been changed before it hit 100K. You are way over. If your engine starts misfiring, say bye bye to your Catalytic converters. Have the dealer do them, since you are not a 'maintenance guy'.

There are plenty of guys that are just as bad. There are guys who don't know how to check the oil and never have. Some cars are, just cars and people really don't care about them but some little things are done not to do because if you neglect them too badly you'll have to replace them and that will cost you more money than adding a quart of oil every now and then.
But a lot of these people do lots of stupid things and make dumb decisions in our lives. I know people like this that he gave them a list of five good decisions they wouldn't choose either one. They would make up a 6th that would be a terrible one and do that.

These people are usually quite low on the income scale and seem to always have problems and never get ahead in the world and can barely dog paddle to keep up in life. Wonder why?

I have a lady who I've been doing repairs on her last three cars for about 15 years maybe longer.
If it weren't for me she would have been through more cars in this. Of time because she would have been presented with an astronomical repair bill to fix something stupid like a starter alternator and she would have gone out and finance another car because she didn't have the money to fix the one she had.
It's about the only reason I work on stuff for people is to keep the shop from getting that kind of money.
So I sold her hey 94 Saturn Station Wagon about 9 years ago for $1,400. And yes, a good deal of that was on time in monthly payments.
Over the course of nine years we had to put three or four tires on it and a starter and a water pump and replace one rear brake line and the front sway bar and rust it off with the unique design to Saturn and the repair quotes for 300 to $600.
I ground off the rust and got a giant grade 5 bolt and ground it down and weld it to the end and put two new spacer bushings on and that's been fixed for about 3 years now.
She had put a crap load of miles on it and it was having transmission issues and I explained to her that it was time to throw in the towel and buy something else.
She is a crazy old cat lady and has extra emotional Hangouts about getting attached to items. Her refrigerator is a 1973 model but it is self defrosting and I repaired it three times for her because she just can't bring herself to get rid of it and get another one. She's already put more money into it they would have cost to buy a used one off of marketplace or heck, people give them away all the time but she just can't let it go.
When I met her she had the car she was driving that broke down and someone referred her to me to fix it and her old car was parked in her garage for two years taking up the space because it broke down and she didn't get it fixed and wouldn't have it towed away.
It took a lot of convincing but I got her to junk two vehicles and sell them for scrap. She is a mess to say the least.
So it was time to get rid of the Saturn as we just couldn't Band-Aid it together any longer and she drives a lot and even takes three or four trips a year several hours away. She broke down near a garage fairly further away from me so she ended up there getting some minor repair done on a radiator hose I believe and this place also had some used cars for sale. I offered to sell her an old used Taurus and she asked me about it. I told her to stay away that she would end up in worse shape than she started and we should go find her a better car and don't buy out of desperation.
The car before her Saturn I went with the car lot and found for her and we bought it and then I sold her the Saturn which is a used car that I had bought and fixed up.
So we're on the phone and she tells me at least twice that she has a habit of making bad decisions!! So I tell her, exactly! This is what I'm telling you. You know you have a habit of making bad decisions and I'm telling you you're about to make one so don't do it!
Did you listen to me, nope. Because she has no self-control and always feel she's a victim.
She always makes comments like well I don't have any other choice I just don't know what I'm going to do.
Sometimes you can only help people or tolerate their crap for so long.
This is the same lady who when her car was broken down was riding the bus over 10 miles to a speciality pet store to get cat food because that's what she wanted to feed her cats instead of making do with any other type of cat food or one of the many that the Kroger store walking distance from her house has. She thought it was absolutely insane an inconceivable that I told her she can obviously get by for a few days 2 2 weeks with her cats and her own stuff and it wouldn't kill her to alter her plans and her diet a little bit. Of course she's vegan so this is even more of an issue. But still a grocery store like Kroger has plenty of things you can do and still be vegan.
It's just not that she's stubborn and set in her ways she's just so used to it she mentally can't handle change or deviation. It's really sad that people have mental problems like this because it's definitely a mental hang up that messes up their lives.
I hate most all change but I'm all into anything that makes my life easier or improves it.
So after about 15 years I had to cut her off. She called me a couple of times and I didn't return her calls so she can just find someone else to check her oil and do her little minor stuff on her car.
I know what will happen though. Eventually she will have a bigger repair and they will present her with a 500 or $600 repair bill and she will panic and call me in desperation to see if there's any possible way that I could look at it for her. My life is much less stressful without her calling me.
I understand that if you loan someone money you shouldn't tell them how to spend it but, when they broke again in two weeks you don't have to loan them any more. This is how I see it with advice and help too.
If you don't take my good advice then I'm not going to repeatedly pull you out of a hole when you keep falling in.

wow, this went sideways real fast.... OP here, I didn't bold the "she" part in the original response, it was just part of the response. In fact, I didn't know any better, so I was just as ignorant as the counter person about the plugs.

Anyway, thanks for all the input. Back-in-the-day, I would have done the work myself (and have many times), but right now, my time is worth more then the labor I'll pay. Not that I'm wealthy, far from it. I am a frugal person by nature, but more about value then actual price. So, paying someone a reasonable amount for this work is a value to me.

The real issue that it runs so good, perfect actually. So that's why I'm questioning the "value" of having work done when everything is working perfect. or is it a ticking time bomb?

Kind of like surgery... once they open you up, it's downhill from there, lol.

Thanks again, David

I thought this poster highlighted she when he quoted and commented on the post.
It makes it a little less offencive if she wasn't highlighted or brought up because it really doesn't matter what sex the person was in that job position. As you mentioned you yourself didn't know either. So they could say the same about you that maybe you shouldn't have that job and you probably don't.
I don't know exactly what year they stopped with the two piece plugs either. It wasn't even a certain year I believe it was September of 2011 but I don't know the exact month off the top of my head. I would expect the dealer to know this. I would expect anyone working in a service capacity to know it or to be able to find it in mere seconds.
My complaint has nothing to do with the sex of the individuals it's the fact that they hire service writers that have very little to no knowledge about mechanical repairs on cars. This totally slows down the process and just makes people shake their head and further not want to go to dealers.

I am the one who bolded the "she", because unless she's the 1 out of 100 who actually knows anything about wrenching on cars/trucks (and I'm probably being over generous here), the stereotype fits. Sorry, but I will not sugarcoat reality to make the progressive types feel better.

I have a lot of respect for women who work as mechanics (as I do for men who do the same job), but they are scarce as hen's teeth in the business!

Again, I will call it as I see it... with no sugar-coating for the hyper-sensitive progressive folks! (sorry!)

It sounds like you're a very nice gentleman for going through all the hoops to help out these types of people. Personally, I don't have the patience to look after lost causes... I will take the time to explain things nice and slow to people who "struggle" with the things I'm knowledgeable about, but if they refuse to listen then they are on their own.

There are 7 billion people on this planet and you can't waste your life trying to help all those who have incorrigible malfunctions, and there are plenty! Just the fact that you are charging fair prices when you work on stuff is very honorable of you, as most shops or individual mechanics won't. Most human beings are opportunistic by nature, therefore they will not hesitate to rip off / take advantage of easy prey (easy prey = dumb people). It is sad, but true.

All true and I'm with you I'm not feeling a need to sugarcoat it. Unfortunately most of the men I know are just as bad as the women you described.

I've never really heard it put that way, most humans are opportunistic by nature, but I think you're right.
I am in some situations but not all.
If I see the back door of the Brinks truck open up and or money Fallout, I'm pulling my car over benia license plate straight down so no one can read it running away from the car so people won't really know it's my grab me money and taking off. They will never get a dime back from memlm but I don't like to rip people off and I can't stand to see the garages make the money so I like to take the money off of their table.

I've run two small businesses for the past 25 years and one I'm much more opportunistic as in I will take what the going rate and what the market will bear from pricing. The other one I'm basically half price from every other lawn mower repair shop in town.
I could double my price is tomorrow and wouldn't lose a speck of business. It's the principle to me.
I know another guy who has ran a small business and is an alternator and starter repair shop for at least 30 years. We have only had a few several minute long conversations at least twice he has said to me that he cannot blame a man for making as much money as possible for doing something. I can.
When you surpass the fair price or value you're getting and the cost of something but I can blame you for charging that much.
I've been in discussions on this forum before arguing that things are a rip-off. Some people say that if it's the going rate or close to it it can't be a rip-off. In my opinion it is highly possible for everyone in Industry to be a rip-off even though that's the going rate. What you're paying so much more for something than what you're actually getting or what value your receiving I say it's a rip-off. Of course, value is often in the eye of the beholder.

Yes....we can be sexist all we want until we don't want to offend a female. Then we tend to watch our mouths.

I've never really heard it put that way, most humans are opportunistic by nature, but I think you're right.
I am in some situations but not all.

The way I see it is simple : the amount of $ charged to the customer should be reflected by the difficulty, shop materials and time spent on the actual work performed. The whole "going rate" argument is a scam orchestrated by shop conglomerates.

I get it that they have overhead to pay for and all, but some of the prices for simple jobs are prison rape territory. One fine example is brake jobs.. it's not uncommon for local shops to charge $1k for swapping 4 rotors and brake pads on a small crossover SUV or sedan. Insane!

Exactly, long live the freedom of speech! Unfortunately some sheeple have been hyper-sensitized by the likes of CNN... because one of your major political parties is hell bent on making your country "the land of the enslaved and home of the *******".

Oops... wuz that "sexist" too?

:p

(just to be clear, I have the utmost respect for the USA and its history & numerous sacrifices... but none for the progressive socialists trying to run your great country into the ground. We have the effects of those false flag brainwashing ops right here in this thread... )
