Making the pig skinny

So just trying to figure this out. What have y'all removed in the interest of weight reduction. I already know the basics, i.e. Spare tire, carpet etc. I'm not looking to turn my truck into a dragster, just looking at dropping some weight as over the next year I will be adding weight back via skid plates, bumpers and other off road equipment. My plans for bumpers are going tube bumper with skids route(prerunner style, picture of idea below). Hopefully those will weigh a little less than stock and have better clearance off-road.

Any ideas of stuff to remove and keep it a daily driver for the family, chime in.

Can't escape the weight gain, maybe it would be a good idea to regear your diffs to help accommodate the extra weight, also a bonus to have torque down low for off-road purposes

Get a new fuel tank. One that's smaller. You don't need so much gasoline if you only do city driving.

Excellent suggestion. LOL But why spend money for a new smaller tank just to reduce weight. Don't you think it would cost less if he were to keep the same tank in case he needs the max fuel capacity and just only fill it half way instead of a full tank.

Yet another good Idea REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE. that way when your back in the boondocks 4 wheeling and you get a flat/blowout you wont have a spare to get your self out

I live in va and do a lot of traveling down to North Carolina for some beach riding and I head north for trails. As for daily drive I don't go very far, spare tire could be brought to me if needed. Now when I go out of town, I have always tossed the spare in the bed area. I'm just trying to figure out the little useless things to get rid of that could drop weight.

Yeah I plan on regearing when I go up in tire size. Haven't decided yet if I want 35" or 37". When I decide which tire size I want them I will regear accordingly. Since I have the npi engine, when I do my rebuild in a year or two I'm looking into a few upgrades. Haven't decided yet what I want to do as I'm still do my homework on the engine to figure out what's best.

Good thinking Maybe get rid of the driver that would save weight. Just remember murphy's law and when you need to call someone to bring you the spare you will be in a spot with no phone service or they won't answer. Best way to save weight is not to add anything you don't need and keep what you do need.

Also I sure wouldn't want to get stuck for any length of time without a spare Imagine how your feel if it takes a few hours for someone to bring you a spare when if it were there you would be on your way in less than 30 minutes.

I have read this 5 times now and all I can't say is :wtf:

Removing the carpet and spare tire will save you, what, about 100lbs.??? Like that's going to make jack shyte of a difference on a 6,000lb. rig!

Face it man. Expeditions are big, heavy, and solid. That's why we all love them!
The only way to change that is by changing the vehicle.

Not sure if you have a sunroof. But if you need this to still function like a family hauler then your options are limited. Sound insulation, center consoles, 3rd row seats, the rear AC system, 3rd row seat belts are just some measures I can think of to reduce weight.

No I don't have the sunroof option, already removed third row seat and belts(but put them in my attic as I don't need them at the moment) and removed the spare tire and hanger. I'm going to keep he ac for the family. As to everyone else's replies, I understand that there is very little to do as far as reducing weight in a vehicle this large. And as far as the spare tire goes, I have never kept one in any of my vehicle while I'm in town. I have free towing if I need it and I always have a spare sitting in the garage if I don't want to wait on a tow or if I'm like 5 minutes up the road. Both my F150 and my explorer I took the spare tire down along with the hangers that held them under the rear of both of them. Just driving around town those item actually helped in both of those vehicles. When I do go out of town with the family for a cruise I always tossed the spare in the back and ratchet it down with a floor jack for peace of mind. Im not looking to get bashed on for a simple question, just trying to see if anyone has done any of this before.

What about the heavy tow bar? I removed mine, dropped at least 60lbs, at least that's what it felt like. Are you going to tow anything, if not easy way to drop lbs. also tow hooks in front are about 10lbs each. Although if your off roading you might need them to pull you out of sticky situation. Do you have a winch? Just my two cents

I don't think anyone is trying to bash you However your logic may be questionable Just like the person that suggest you buy a smaller fuel tank rather that use what you have and not fill it as much. Keeping 15 gal or less in a 30 gal tank will save you weight but buying a small tank to have less fuel to keep the weight down is purely logical and cost efficient in someone's opinion. Just not in my opinion.

I wasn't sure if I was being bashed or not. Internet... Can't tell how people are talking... I'm tryin to look at ways to save on gas for the time being until I start loading it up with equipment(at which point gas mileage won't be looked at).

As far as tow points and the hitch, those will be staying since I do tow off and on and it would be a waste of time taking it on and off. Spare tire and hanger are removed and spare is in garage until needed(plus when I get larger tires, the spare simply won't fit under the truck). Third row seat and belts are removed and placed in storage(attic) as I don't need them anytime soon. I pulled the jute from the plastic panels in the rear, which all together that stuff felt like 30-40lbs. Carpet is out as I coated the entire floor pan with bed liner, haven't decided yet of the carpet/jute will be installed yet(gotta get transmission put back in and road test it to see if the noise is bothersome). I will say the gallon of bed liner I used definitely weighed less than all the carpet and jute that I pulled out.

I'm off work until middle of January. Loving it, got time to finish the half million projects I've got around the house.
