Just figured out that I need an update for the new to me 2012 Expedition EL Limited. $149???? My phone does it for free, what the hell is the point of paying $150 for the same feature in the car.

Also, my Expy has the remote start feature. I am supposed to be able to remote start and do all this other crap from my phone if I register with the site and download the apps.

Account made; done.
Registration; done.
Phone sync; done.

What else do I have to do?

No, I do not have the original handbook and guides.

Half-azzed rant over.

I hear ya on the cost of the updates. Kind of old-fashioned compared to where the marketplace has gone. As for the remote start, my 2016 has the factory remote start as well but it only works if you are close by and from the key fob. If I want the cell phone based remote start I either buy the Ford add-on module for about $380 plus installation or get one from a local installer, like a Viper or similar. If yours has that module installed, then all you need to do is get a yearly subscription for around $49/year. Good luck!!

The map updates aren't even remotely worth it. Every update is still at least 3-5 years behind the current state of a given road - provided the road even appears on the map at all. My '11 maps show roads that were shut down over a decade ago as being open. In state/national park lands, it usually shows no roads at all, despite the fact that the roads were built in the '50s. The POIs are virtually non-existent and are also always several years out of date even with the latest update. Stick with Google Maps. Heck you can even get a $20 tablet, use your phone as a hot spot, and bam, you have a large, easy-to-see GPS in your truck.

Its ridiculous to think that these companies (whose sole purpose is to have "up to date information") are so far behind and yet charge so damned much for basic info that is FREE on every smart phone in use.

Maybe i'm over thinking the plausibility of a company actually supplying a quality product for a reasonable price.

No doubt WAZE or Google Maps are a better source for navigation. The only real reason I can see for an update is to ensure phone compatibility for blue tooth and linked audio.

The Sync My Ride site has pretty good step by step instructions for updating the software side, without buying new maps.

I paid for the update to my 2014, won't do it again it's a waste of money. I live on a road that's older than me and they have me off road to get home. Plus it dropped half the restaurants that were there before the update.

Don't waste your money.

I bought the update for my wife's Navigator. It seemed a total waste of time and money. I had anticipated the possibility of slightly improved graphics or user features. It's the same 1996 looking map! The other thing that surprised me is that I keep getting letters to renew it months afterward!

I decided to NOT update the maps and even more despise it from my interaction on Thursday.

10 November is the United States Marine Corps birthday, celebrated every year with traditional formal Ball and Birthday celebration. Our Ball happened to be at Myrtle Beach, and the Ford Nav Maps took us to the complete wrong location. We ended up over an hour late. I know I entered the address correctly and verified it.

So, no more Nav for me. That sealed the deal; we use the phone from here on out.

You should be able to get an updated map SD card off ebay - you probably have an A4 card or something and I think it's up to A6 or A7 now.

EDIT: A7 is the newest, looks like $60-70 on Ebay from reputable sellers. A7 would have come with 2016 vehicles, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them continue to offer them (Sync3 doesn't use them though)

I could be wrong, but I think the '12 Expeditions were still using the Navteq #P (.e.g 9P) updates via DVD. Updates for those are unavailable anywhere afaik (I couldn't find them for my '11).

You can update the Sync software via the USB port. Take a look at this thread (starting around page 9) for more info: http://www.expeditionforum.com/threads/2015-2016.31700/page-9

In a 2012? Not according to Ford's documentation. I can't say I've tried it though.
