Was it rail dust or just water spots?

Its probably from the brake pads. Its plastic trim, so its not durable.

The electronic running boards are solid metal. Not plastic. I have none of this in my 2016 and I live by the ocean and have 3 months of salt roads in the winter and no corrosion or pinning

I have rail dust all over my 2018.
Cleaned up most with certain wheel cleaner...works like a rail dust product....turns pink.
I had all over the lower sections of body panels and all over rear tailgate. I have the metallic white paint (can't remember the name). They keep coming back, so will address with more wheel cleaner (be sure to check which wheel cleaner to use, but much cheaper that rail dust specific remover).
