With leaks from the pipe in the valley it wouldnt be that severe as to leak a whole gallon in 10 days! The ones we have seen are just minor seepage and maybe light puddling in the block valley.

That's interesting.

Your comment about the valve guide seals got me thinking, if the intake gasket is leaking above that questionable cylinder, could coolant be making it's way not only into the valley, but dumping some into the intake port of that cylinder. Apparently anything above 150k and the gaskets get brittle, and that's when the fun starts.

Well ol' moose hopefully you are right and it's just the intake. I poked the boroscope down in there again and it's all flourescent green from the UV dye. So the good news is I found the source of both my misfire and disappearing coolant. The bad news is... well, so now I'm down to head gasket or intake gaskets. I'd be happy w/ intake. :p

I rented a pressure tester and pumped up the coolant system while cold as well as hot. It holds pressure. PSI drop is like 1/2 psi over 10 minutes. That has me hopeful - however, since I did experience some coolant loss around the cap I'm wondering if the head gasket is failing there's also some activity in the degass bottle - not all out bubbling but some really fine bubbles and quite a bit activity when I gun it with the cap off. I don't know how much action there should be in the bottle - because after all it's a 'degass' bottle right? there should be some motion?? I think I'm going to buy one of those chemical test kits to make sure.

Yeah, even a broken clock is right twice a day! Hey Brian, you might also pull the exaust manifolds back, and see if coolant leaks out. The fact you got no signs of overheating, or exaust gasses in the coolant, kinda leads away from head gaskets. But that coolant has got to go somewhere. No white smoke, no milky oil, well you'll figure it out when you tear into it. If memory serves, a blown gasket won't hold pressure on the radiator pump gauge. Yours does.

Chemical test came out positive: head gasket failure.
I'm waiting for a phone call back from a mechanic for a quote.
