The backup aid on my 2003 Expedition went bad. It keep saying check backup aid. The Ford dealer just put in a new backup aid module. When you put it into reverse now, the beeping starts and stays beeping whether there is an obstruction behind or not. If you get close to an object, the beeping increases. The dealer says this is the way the new updated module works. Has anyone heard of this or was the install done incorrectly?

The 2009 expedition does the same thing. Its kind of annoying because it overrides the radio but it sounds normal. I think it adds that beeping to indicate your in reverse for some people who are too stupid to read their gear indicator or are having just one of those days where you done goofed.

I don't recall this in my '11. I'll confirm next time I'm in it and let you know if it does.

Update: I have found out from another Ford dealer who is very reliable that the new backup aid module should not be beeping when put into reverse unless there is an object there. I went back to the dealer who installed it and it appears his mechanic was less than truthful for some reason when he said that was normal with the updated modules. (It also did not make common sense to me or others.) The vehicle is scheduled to go back to the Ford dealer on Wednesday. I suspect there may be another problem. I went to the Ford dealer in the first place, because this is their product. They diagnosed the problem which they charged me $100 a couple months ago. I did not want to fix it around the holidays so I waited until last week to get a price of $450 to do the repair. I gave them the go ahead and paid them $470. I've got a bad feeling here. Will see what happens.

The new module has not come in yet, so we still have not solved the problem. I will post any new news.

On my '03, one sensor was missing and the other pretty much fell apart when I tried to un-clip the connector. I ordered 2 replacements off of eBay and installed them. The plastic retainer on one had broken, so I used some mechanics wire to keep it in place. According to my local dealer, these parts are NLA. Now mine do the same thing, start beeping as soon as the truck is put in reverse. I thought I read somewhere that there is a calibration procedure that may need to be done. My back bumper has its fair share of bumps and bruises too, so it's possible one or both isn't pointing in the exact right direction. With 3 possibilities (wire, calibration and//or aim), I'm thinking of just disconnecting the sensors all together and forget the whole thing.

Another Backup Aid was installed by the dealer. No change. It still does not work. The dealer called back and wanted another $450 for the rear radar sensor which was on their diagnostic sheet last November. That did not go over well with me. After a discussion with the service manager, he agreed to fix the problem whatever it turns out to be at no cost to me. Vehicle goes back in tomorrow, well see.
