Just purchased an 03 Expedition XLT, 130K miles. It was a one owner car, serviced at the dealer the entire time (the carfax confirmed this guy had it there every 3-5K miles). I don't know much about cars, but could tell my brakes were bad-rotors felt warped. Brought it to a reputable garage. They confirmed rotors were warped and replaced all. I expected this. They told me an inspection was done and all else looked VERY well maintained. However, when turning at low speeds, in and out of driveway, I hear a clunk. I'm wondering what this could be and if it's a serious problem or just a part of owning an older SUV with a 130K miles. Am I being paranoid or could there be a mechanical/safety issue here? The garage gave me piece of mind with their inspection but now I'm second guessing if they missed something? CV joints or something?

Any insight or suggestions are appreciated!

ball joints. sway bar links?

That would be my thought.

Also check sway bar bushings or engine mounts (not sure if failure of those parts manifests itself as a clunk on the expedition, but it did on my MPV).

IIRC, CV joints generally are a clicking sound when turning.

It's back in the shop. They're telling me the ball joints are good-no play. He is thinking sway bar bushings. Assuming this is it, am I OK driving with the noise? It only happens during tight turns (in and out of driveway, parking spaces). The mechanic isn't pressing me to do anything-just the opposite actually.

Thanks for you input!

honolulu, hi
you can actually look at the sway bar bushings yourself, they are pretty easy to look and replace, I just got an expi with 139k on the clock and the clunky noise was due to the driver side bushing failed, crack and broke off, very common on high milage vehicles. parts were only $13.00 and took about 15 mins to replace.

Yea, take a look under there and see if anything is broken or in bad condition. Can you recreate it but "jumping" on one side (basically, rocking the vehicle side to side).
