New PCM questions for '97 Expy

I've got some questions about installing a new PCM into my '97 expo. From what I can tell, either a '97 or a '98 PCM will work no problem, but what else do I need to get it to work? I've ready something about the PATS system and getting the keys to work so the truck will start, but I don't know much more than that. Has anyone installed a new PCM into their expy and got everything up and running relatively easily? I'm trying to get a Edge Evo working, and was told the '97 PCM won't work, but the '98 are supported.

Your getting bad information. IF you swap the ECM the pats will either have to be disabled with an aftermarket tune or Dealer software(FORD calls it IDS) My local dealer charges a reasonable amoun (under 50$) to reprogram VIN and keys for pats.

For some states the VIN does not matter as far as ECM is concerned with Inspections prior to CAN bus(05 and up does matter for most states)

So you could potentioly just have an aftermarket tune with pats disabled and swap to another ECM and not have to worry about getting the dealer to do anything.

Tell me more about some of these aftermarket tunes. I don't plan on doing anything serious to the engine as far as performance upgrades (i.e. no headers, no exhaust, etc.) I like the fact that I can change things by myself when I want to with a hand held tuner device, but it's becoming more of a hassle than anything. I'm really only trying to up my fuel economy. Am in the process of doing the Gotts mod and a full tune up, and am planning on installing an electrical fan in the future, and the tuner was supposed to be the icing on the cake.

Is it a stock PCM you are getting?? If so its Plug n Play.

You only TUNE when you have aftermarket mods, ie injectors, turbos, shift kits, etc etc.. Some people seem to think they have to flash every time they buy one or get a used one that is wrong if it came from the same vehicle, within corresponded years..

Now PATS, there is a thread on here where you can re-sync the Key/remote manually I will try and dig it up.. But I havent heard any issues, with PATS with PCM change..

Swaped my ECM for a 98 because my chip i was using at the time blew up and took out my ECM. it is all plug and play.
