no compression #8

I have a 98 xlt with a 4.9l 2v windsor. The problem is the intake valve on #8 is open all the time. I replaced the spring and lash adjuster. I did a compression check and a leak down test. The weird thing is when I take off the plate that holds the cam down I get compression. When I torque it back down I lose compression through the intake valve. I am stumped? Thanks Dan
