nut sizes

hello to all,

I have a 1999 expedtion xlt 2 wheel drive. i have almost 200,000 miles on it and i am going to replace the lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ens on both sides, the upper control arms on both sides, sway bar bushings, pitman arm and the idler arm as well. I only have the one veichle so it is important that i have everything i need to finish the job before i take it apart.

So my question is what size sockets and wernches will i need to complete the job? Any help would be great so i can go buy what i dont already have.

Most will be Metric But make sure you get the correct size to remove the front wheel hub nut. Off hand I don't remember the size. I'll post it if I can find the right size needed

Is your SUV two or four wheel drive? Your tag line doesn't say. I'm assuming you have wrenches and sockets from 7mm to 19mm. You'll also need a tie rod end (pickle fork). You can buy one pretty cheap at oreillys or auto zone. If it's four wheel drive I can remove my hubcap and measure nut, think it's about 32 mm, not 100 percent sure. My question for you is, have you ever taken on a job this big before? You kinda need to know what your doing in there! We can help with some of it but you need to know to mark old tie rods with crayon or chalk, so new ones go on same approximate threads. Some of the special front end tools you'll need you can leave deposit and borrow. Easiest way for you or anyone for that matter, would be to buy complete upper and lower control arms. You don't want to mess with lower ball joint pressing in and out. Same goes for control arm bushings. Better done on hydraulic press. Good luck!

Thanks for replying. It is a 2 wheel drive. I read that the hub nut is a 35mm. Yes I have done a job like this before but just not on my expedition. Yes I do have the normal wrenches and sockets as well as the picked fork. I will also rent the ball joint press from autozone. I just don't want to get it half way tore apart and then don't have the right size socket or wrench. I think for the most part it's just the castle nut on the ball joints, upper and lower, and the bolts that hold the upper control arm that I need sizes on.

Couldn't tell you on those sizes. Keep in mind if your pressing in lower ball joints, make sure you have the oversize ones just in case holes are worn. Me I like Moog, because they have a grease fitting. One of the few that does. Lasts longer if you grease them. Do you have a repair book/ cd. Might give you wrench/ socket sizes of nuts/ bolts. Good luck.

I seen a video today that said tie rod and upper ball joint is a 13/16 and lower ball joint is a 1 1/16...I plan going to the auto part store and they said they will allow me to take the sockets outside and slide under my SUV and see if they fit. I am going back with all moog parts. I spent the extra money so hopefully I can go another 200,000 miles before messing with this again. And yes I have a Hanes book but it does not give socket sizes.

Do you know by chance if the replacement part will have the same size nut? If so then all I have to do is match that up...

Probably not. I changed out shocks last week, they were different socket size. All you can do is try sockets or wrenches on new ones. If you got the extra scratch, you might consider buying some socket set. You'll most likely use again. You can usually get some good deals at Sears or any place automotive. Even ace hardware has some deals. I bought a 18 v battery drill couple weeks back. Food for thought!

The Haynes manual is good for starting fires Get yourself a copy of the Ford Workshop Manual on DVD about half the cost of Haynes or Clymer and worth 10X more has information that is specific to your year and model
