Octane Boosters

Has anyone tried any of these with any success? I'm curious as to whether the work compared to just switching to premium gas at .25/gal more than unleaded.

I've always been told that unless you're running a turbo charger they'll make no difference. I tried a couple bottles out in my 05 Mustang GT and never noticed an improvement. It's mostly placebo effect, especially in these big beasts.

I've tried it as well in by wife's 2006. I didn't notice any difference, and didn't tell my wife (the only one that drives the vehicle regularly), so that I could see if she noticed any difference without knowing that I'd added it. Neither of us noticed anything. I also tried a full tank of premium (93 octane here) on a recent trip because I'd heard different opinions on increased performance / fuel economy. We got the exact same MPG as we always get, and we always just use regular. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had any other results. If you do a Google search, there are thousands of different views on whether it makes a difference or not, but I was told it doesn't hurt anything to try!

The best octane booster I found available in the US is Amsoil series 2000. It raises the RON octane by up to 2.0 points. Most octane boosters do not advertise the (R+M)/2 (Pump Octane Number) so it can be misleading.

I would not recommend octane boosters at all for the expedition unless you are running some form of boost via supercharger, turbo etc...

Generally premium is not even needed unless you raise the timing to make use of it via a tuner or chip.
I run the highest octane available which is 93 in MD only because I am running 11 psi boost.

Unless you have a performance engine that needs the higher octane to stop preignition higher octoane fuel and octane boosters are just a waste of money. actually for the best performance all around the lower the octane the better lower octane fuel actually is more efficient[given you have no pinging problems].

For the record, we don't use the RON system of measurement here in the states. Our pumps display AKI numbers.

Also, if you don't have a high compression motor, higher octane fuels are a waste.

"(R+M)/2 (Pump Octane Number) as the name implies, is determined by adding together a fuel's RON and MON ratings and dividing by two. This is the common rating found on pumps in North America."

Its the average between research and motor octane numbers.

mine runs on 89. 87 is okay... and 91 it runs a little better. but 89 is where i get the most mileage.

That and/or some sort of boost (raises your effective compression ratio) also tuners that raise the timing high enough to safely run on regular unleaded.
