smokeater, I have used Havoline dino oil in my truck since day 1. As for the filter, I normally use either a Fram filter or a Wix filter. But then, I also change my oil ever 3K miles. So, no need to worry about spending extra on full synthetics and whatnot. This also gives me a reason to do a once over of the truck to see how it is running.
castrol gtx. high mileage now. and usually fram, but wix if its along with the sale. we just wait for a sale and it seems every 3000 miles i drive theres a sale on gtx and a filter. WOO!
I swear by synthetic oils. Gives you more insurance against failure and it has been dyno proven to increase hp on old school mustangs. Not by much but the fact that it increases hp at all means there is more friction with conventional oil. I am not particular to any brand but I typically use mobil one or castrol.
As far as filter I stick with motorcraft. I have had ticking lifters before on startup with other performance brand as it would allow oil to bleed out when turned off.
Also use Castrol GTX and Fram oil filter. Changed every 3000 miles. On the other hand my Dodge Stratus gets Advanced Auto store brand oil and the cheapest Purolator oil filter. Oil changes are done whenever I get to it. Lol. I hate that car and it just won't die.
