My 05 is using oil, last oil change I noted down 2 quarts at 4,000 miles. Now I have 2,000 miles on the oil and it's showing down a quart so looks like it's consistant. I have had the car for just under a year now so I don't have a history. I do get a plume of blue/white smoke sometimes at start up and soot around the tail pipe. Question, does anyone know or have experience with what Ford says is "normal oil consumption" as I have an extended warranty that was transferred to me and was thinking of taking it in for the problem. My guess however is Ford will say it's within specs, you know how that story goes.

i have an 05 EB also, i owned it since new and every oil change from day 1 i have been down 1qt.(oil changed every 3000 mi) early on i had ford do an oil consumption test, which is basicly they check the oil once a week and note it between oil changes. this also means they have to change it in the begining and at the end, any way the end result was that the 5.4 3v is with in normal limts of 1 qt every 3-5 thousand miles is acceptable. i do not agree with this but that is what they said. hope it helps.

I pretty much figured that was the case. I had a Chevy Tahoe that drank oil from day one and GM specs said that 1 qt every 800 miles was within specs for the 350......So I have a feeling Ford would be the same, amazing isn't it. I'm going to get it on record while the warranty is still active as I only have 56,000 on it. Must be the valve seals since I get the big plume at start up.

i would have them do thier "test" the only thing you will be out is the price of 2 oil changes, what i did not agree with was in my 97 EB with a 5.4 i never had an oil use issue, also keep an eye/ear out for ticking/knocking sound after warm up it very common in this year to have bad cam phasers and chain tenisioners. if you have it, make them replace it. there is a TSB on the issue.

Funny you say that I have that tickng sound but can't tell where it's coming from, I thought it was coming from the AC compressor. Any link to the TSB on this and is this on all 5.4's or just certain years?

no problem, i searched around and found this TSB #, TSB 06 19 08. i did not have time to google it but it was on the 150.net forum. i must say outside of what it cost me to have mine replaced, the truck has never given me problems, i love it!
