I noticed an oil stain on the pavement under the engine of my 2000 Expedition yesterday. There is also another stain on the pavement below where the console is. What is leaking?

This sounds like the notorious head gasket leak on these. Ford runs coolant ports and oil ports right by each other on the heads and the head gaskets tend to leak oil out of the back passenger side corner or possibly the driver side corner in the back of the motor which will make it look like it coming from the firewall area. What is the mileage on yours?

I have to agree. My 99 has the same problem. Oil runs down the starter and exhaust. I had a thread on here of a half-a$$ fix with some permatex spray on gasket maker. I did that about 6 months ago and it still seems to be working. I drove my Expy on a 600 mile trip and didn't lose a drop of oil. I'll try to post a link if I can find it.

thanks for your replies. Sorry I didn't provide all the info. I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition with about 222K miles. We don't drive it much because I'm unemployed - just running the kids around. IF we don't do anything but add oil - will it be ok for awhile until we can get the money to replace the head gasket?

I guess it depends how bad the leak is. Is it a few drops or half a quart puddle? If it just seems like a minor leak then keeping up with the oil level will suffice. If it's pouring out then it might be a gamble.

I have to agree. I rode around with mine leaking for over a year before I did my full build. I was usually adding about 1-1.5 quarts between oil changes. Now I am sadly back to half a quart between oil changes due to a leaky rear main seal. Based on mileage it sounds about right for a head gasket leak.

We think the leak may have been from our air ride bags in the front. The rear ones failed last week and our mechanic said it was only a matter of time with the front ones because they were leaking oil. The compressor was in borrowed time too. So we jusr removed it all and installed struts, shocks and springs. I will kerp an eye on the oil stain and see if it grows.
