Sorry for the repost on octane rattle. But I think this may have something to do with it. I didn’t want to open a thread for each thing listed in subject for they all might have something to do with one another.
The head gasket . The seams on the underside of the heads look wet with oil. Not much, nothing running or dripping. I have had no signs of a bad gasket within the motor besides that rattle.
Now oil loss and levels. I have had the truck for about a month. I changed the oil a week after having it. I checked the level a few times right after doing the change but have not in the past week and a half. I checked it the other day and it was down. On the dipstick you have the safe range of oil level. When I did the change the level was ¾ up on the range. It has lost some oil to ¼ up on the range. Does the 5.4 have a habit of eating oil? I have not smelled oil burn or any other performance issues that might relate to a blown head gasket besides that wet seam. For the hell of it Im going to do a compression check.
Now with the level down lower I haven not heard the rattle. Can a high level or over fill of oil cause the rattle? Could being on the higher side of the safe mark be to much even if its within that range?
