Only goes into A4wd?

I just bought a 1997 expy with 119k miles. When I went to put it in 4H, it would only go to auto four wheel. Same with 4L. I rolled up to a dirt hill to try to get it stuck in 2wd to test if the auto is functional. It is the auto does what it's supposed to. But why won't it go to 4h or 4l...
