Over active running boards

Hi I have a new-to-me 2022 Ford Expedition Limited. Love the vehicle, but there are some quirks that concern me. When I open the door, the running boards come out for my wife to enter (yes, chivalry still exists). When I shut the door, they retract immediately. I have the boards set on a 5-minute delay. I go around to the driver side and they have to come out again. This is going to wear out the motors in no time. Is this correct, or is Ford feeding me BS that the 5-minute delay is not for that purpose?

I have a 2024 Limited with power running boards. The delay works perfectly.

I've seen other comments from people with 2022s who say that the delay doesn't work. Maybe there's a quirk in the firmware that Ford never addressed.

This drives me nuts. They are so aggressive in closing that each door means an up down cycle. I usually put my stuff in the back seat (down up) then get in the front door (down up)

Where is the delay setting?!?!? I looked and didn't see it.

The running boards operate on each side independently. Opening the passenger side doors does NOT effect the driver's-side boards and vice versa. Also, when I put stuff in the back seat, I open the driver's door before I close the rear door. Saves wear and tear on the expensive board motor.

My running boards operate together. My passenger side boards go down when I get in the drivers seat.

I'd also love to increase the delay; the question is how????

My '22 Platinum has both sides operate together. There's also no "delay" setting unless it's something that's been added recently, or is included in a software update I've not gotten yet. And the 2022 modules are in so much disarray, I don't even think there's a know FORScan solution.

I sometimes think I just want to pull the plug so that they never retract. At some point these motors are going to fail; hopefully that happens in the extended position.

From the 2024 owner's manual. Apparently, there's no way to adjust the length of "Auto Timer".

Our 2020 is independently operated. But during the microchip shortage of the pandemic, Ford cut back on some items to reduce delays. One of these was combining the control logic for the running boards together. So post-pandemic models the boards deploy together.

Yeah this is just crazy bad software. I had to use forscan to set my delay to 4 minutes.

To me this is a safety concern too. Ford could get a big lawsuit when someone's car is in the garage and crushes a toddler or cat or dog by coming back in unexpectedly at just the wrong moment. My dog loves to sniff the running boards to smell who has been on them!

I leave my driver's door not fully closed in my garage so the running boards never go back in. If you dig through the menus there is a setting called "out" which leaves them out until you put it in drive and go 3mph. Unfortunately this setting resets every time you start the car.

If I had my choice for new settings, the running boards would both come out once you put the car in park and open the door. After that they should simply stay out FOREVER until you put the car in drive and go 3mph.

A while back Ford put in a new touch button at the top of the touchscreen to tap and turn the cameras on. A good compromise would be to put a button for the "out" position up there too. That way we could just click it when turning the car off instead of having to go three levels deep in menus.

Is that built into FORscan now? It's been about three years since I've played with FORscan, and most of the stuff for the 2022's wasn't mapped yet. I'm VERY interested in making this change.

On my 2024 Limited, the running boards retract automatically when the vehicle speed reaches 3 mph. Note, this works in Reverse, too.
