I have to agree with Gixer.

The secret to making a fuel pump last is to never let the fuel get low enough to uncover the pump. The pump is cooled by the fuel so never let the reserve light come on. I try to never let the fuel level get below 1/4. My best friend has his own shop and he has seen fuel pumps go over 200,000 miles and that is the secret. If you constantly run the tank down until the reserve light comes on it will shorten the life of the pump. I have been practicing that with all of my vehicles and so far the fuel pumps are good.

I bought the truck from a private seller about 2 months ago. When I purchased it, it was extremely low on fuel. I believe it had something like 24 miles left, he said he purposely let it go low on gas in case anyone tried to steal it (was parked at his private business). Im thinking that may have had something to do with.

I have ordered a oem fuel pump, supposed to get here this weekend. Going to try and do this my self, I have installed 2 other fuel pumps (my mustang gt and old explorer)

I don't think one time would hurt the pump but if it is constantly allowed to be uncovered the heating and cooling cycles will eventually cause problems. I think there are two straps holding the tank. If it's almost empty it shouldn't be too bad weightwise. I've never done one but I have crawled under mine a time or two to see how everything was connected.
