Question is, when I put the key in and turn it but do not start the truck (either late or night don't want to wake anybody what have you) and I pull the selector to neutral without the engine running, I coast down the driveway but the brakes do not work... If they do it's very difficult to press them down to get anything out of them... Is this because the brake booster only works when the engine is running? And if I do try to use brakes with the motor off in neutral, is it bad for it?

I know it's not quite the same thing but, my grandfather once blew a transmission while going downhill in neutral and just using the brakes. The thought was that neutral had less pull on the motor thus making braking more efficient.

Too bad the transmission didn't agree with that.

The brake booster runs off vacuum from the engine, so braking should be very difficult with the engine off. Also, the transmission pump only runs with the engine running so coasting in neutral with the truck off probably isn't allowing the trans proper lubrication.
