I would like to be able to leave the rear hatch open for extended periods but don't want the dome lights on. I assume the wiring is in the latch in the door.... right? Anyone know what wire I would switch to disable the dome light?

Easiest way would be to wire a switch to the switched side of the interior lamp relay. The other method would be to pull the relay each time.
For any generation I would get a wiring manual since it helps with the locations and wiring colors.

I wish I remember where it was - there was a post that said you could put an interrupter on the rheostat that controls the illumination. Although I havent done it but that would be a solution not just to the tail gate but to disable the cabin lights if wanted

My 99 has the illumination and courtesy lights as two separate circuits. That addition wouldn't work on at least that year.

I always take a screw driver and latch the door when its open. We go to drive ins and I just turn 3rd row around. Then when I get ready to leave I just squeeze handle to open latch back up. Sometimes gotta use screw driver to help. Then you can close the door back.
