rebuild or reman?

im going to start saving up for a motor rebuild or a reman..or possibly oe? im unsure...does anyone have any results or mixed feelings of either? i figured if i have it rebuilt i would change the cams add bigger injectors and have it built nice so i can get some good power/torque out of it... or just drop in a new oe or a reman engine... what are you guys thoughts on this? any help is appreciated thanks. oh ya...im burning right around 1/2 to 1qt a month depending how hard i am on it..no leaks..just a few ticks under 200k mi on original engine. i just want to be prepared so my truck isnt down forever:barf: that thought makes me sick to have my truck down for too long...thanks guys

I've been thinking about this very subject since I bought my truck. Although I've built motors in the past, I don't think that I'm going to go that route this time.
I've decided that I will probably go with a remanufactured long block. There are a few companies that will do some mild performance mods during the rebuild and still offer a warranty. The pricing is around $2,300. plus any performance parts (cams?) which includes shipping the motor and also shipping the core back to them.

For me it's not worth the extra time it would take to build it myself. I also don't want to deal with the little things that creep up, like broken exhaust studs that need to be replaced, installing inserts in the plug holes to avoid future problems, etc. Putting in a reman will only have the truck out of commission for 4 to maybe 7 days. Doing it myself and waiting for the machine shop and parts to show up could easily take 5 or 6 weeks. The reman guys also know these motors inside and out, they fix any of those "problem areas" that the Ford engineers overlooked.


Since I'm just getting a long block, I can choose to reuse the existing items, like injectors, intake & exhaust manifolds, and even alternator, or put in high performance versions.

If you can build it yourself, AND have the time, do that. Otherwise a reman is the most cost effective way to go. A shortblock can be had at reasonable prices.
Now a built shortblock with aftermarket heads, cams, and a supercharger on top, that is what I would do if I had the time and money. But the money has to come first as I don't have $15-20K laying around.

if i had 15-20 laying around to spare on a project...i dont think id be super charging it but it would definetly be getting some serious mods
