Remove front drive shaft until I can get it repaired

Good morning to all. march/15/2016

I have had my 1997 4X4 XLT Expedition since 2002 an recently it has been making noises front the front drive/shaft/axle area. I recently replaced both CV axles for good measures.

I want to know if I can remove the front drive shaft 'temporarily' to get me bye until I can get all of the vacuum lines replaced/repaired?

Makes a clunking noise occasionally.

Sure, I believe you can. Just to be safe, I wouldn't shift into AWD or 4WD while the shaft is off. I've driven mine with the front driveshaft removed.

Thanks to both for ur responses. I have removed the driveshaft. The car is still in 4wd mode on the dashboard symbols. Can I turn the dial to 2wd, even if the amber light initials are not visible? Will this adjustment to the selector switch to 2wd have a negative impact while driving? Again Thanks.

I would switch it back to 2WD. There is a position switch in the transfer case shift motor, but I don't think there is any sensor telling the PCM the front axle is connected or not.
