removing cats questions

So in an effort to figure out what is actually wrong with my truck, im considering lopping off the cats but Im curious as I dont know a ton abuot fords if it will cause computer issues. I simply had check engine lights on my mustang when i went longtubes and offroad x pipe but I dont know if this truck is different or not. anyone?

As far as computer problems goes, You will only throw o2 sensor codes.

If you are removing all the cats I would recommend replacing them with High flow cats, or replacing the muffler with a better one. Because with the way the ford heads were designed, They need back pressure, and if they don't have the back pressure that they need, you will eventually get head knock. Which isn't fun. I've been through it myself on my 98 4.6l. In all honestly, these engines run better with the cats still on them. If anything at all, I'd just gut the cats.


Right now I'm running high flow cats by flowmaster, 2.5" pipe into a single in, dual out super 44 muffler from Flowmaster. I don't have any piping coming out of the muffler it self, and it sounds pretty good.

there are a lot of guys running cat delete...were they just removed the 2nd cats on the trucks...

I'm not sure if it will work the same on an Expedition, but on my Saturn I just removed the 1st o2 sensor (the one before the 1st cat).

My saturn had very little power, wouldn't go over 30 mph, the rpms bounced around, and it stalled once. I removed the first o2 sensor and it drove great. This told me that the cat was clogged.

You don't want to drive much like this because it will run rich and cause engine damage, but you might want to try it for a mile or two and see if the problem gets any better.

+1 on not doing that
