Resistance??

So I have a 2005 XLT. I notice when I am driving the vehicle that there are times where the engine feels, for lack of a better word "sluggish" I sometimes feel like a resistance when I am up around 40 to 50 mph. If I gun it the resistance goes away. Its almost like the engine is pulling back or something. I am having a hard time describing it but its just a resistance. Like it just doesnt have the power to get going at that speed. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this and maybe have a solution?

Is it misfiring or CEL? Has something changed since when you purchased it?

05s have an electronic throttle which can feel different if you aren't used to it. Your foot isn't connected to the throttle body, the computer decides how much power get based on throttle position. If that is what you are noticing a tune can improve the throttle response.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell. The worse it gets the easier it is to tell. Stuttering or a shake in the vehicle when stationary can indicate a misfire. It bad enough it will trigger the CEL.

A COP going bad can act this way before it goes completely bad.

COPs could def be the issue. It won't trigger a CEL until it's bad enough it gets past a certain misfire count. If you have a long uphill grade try keeping it in a higher gear to load the engine and it may give enough to throw a code.

Another thing to consider is possible dragging brakes. Particular the rears. If your emergency brake shoes are too snug, or one of the cables is binding. It will feel like no power. My 2000 expy does this after it gets warm. The other thing with brakes, make sure one of the calipers isn't sticking. If you park outdoors it can happen, especially after new pads are installed. Also check e brake cables, making sure their totally releasing. Just something to check.

You could also check the fuel pump pressure. Sometimes low fuel pressure could cause those symptoms. If you dont have a gauge yet, get yourself one. Its a handy tool that is worth adding to your collection. Also a repair manual dvd for the specific year of your expy. Somebody here in the forum sells it. Another thing as far as the electronic throttle is concerned is that you can do a throttle relearn procedure. The details of which is in the manual. As for the brakes dragging, try to CAREFULLY touch the rotors on all four after a long drive and see if it is hot -if it is, then the brake on that side is binding.
