I set my cruise control at 74 mph. Cruising along we start up a long grade, into a heavy head wind and the truck downshifts out of OD into D then into 2nd gear to try to maintain speed. Tach jumps up to, what, 4k rpm or so? After about 15-20 seconds of hard charging up the hill, the computer kicks into retard mode. The engine bogs and loses speed. Turn off cruise, let it mellow for a bit, it "unretards" the tune and the truck seems to run ok, but the engine light stays on. Well, ok, it might be a stupid thing to do with gas racing past $4 per gallon, but if I want to floor my truck and leave it floored, it should be my right to do so! Is this "normal"? My 2003 never did this. Do I have to buy one of those programmers to tune the chip? Something else wrong with my truck? Bought it about 3k miles ago with 68k on the clock, and it's done it since my day one.

Typically, when the engine bogs and the CEL light comes on, it is a Coil issue. I had this happen about a year ago and had the code read at AutoZone and it came back as a misfire. Turned out it was a bad COP.

I had this same thing happen while CC was set although I didn't allow the vehicle to rev high for any length of time at all. I make it a practice now to kick off the CC when traveling up any roads with a decent grade.
