Hello everyone,
Has anyone put a set of 2022 and newer expedition rims on a 3rd gen?
I just got this platinum 2017 el with 85,000 miles and the stock 22 inch rims are pretty chewed up.
It has brand new 22 inch grabber tires and thought I could put some brand new 22 inch rims from a 2022 model on this.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks in advance
Loving this new vehicle, came from a 2018 explorerIMG_4822.jpegScreenshot 2026-01-06 at 7.44.30 AM.png

If I were here, you would know it !
Assuming that all the measurements (width, bolt pattern/spacing, and offset) are the same or close, it should work nottaproblemo.

However, I would recommend finding the spec sheets for both sets of rims & tires, then compare before proceeding.....perhaps call a local stealership, give them the VIN #, and go from there...

Good luck on the swap :D

It will bolt right up for you, no need to bother with a dealership (like they'll know anyway). Nothing important changed between the 3rd and 4th gen in regards to wheel/tire fitment.

I just put 2020 18" rims on my 2017 to replace the 22". 2022 and newer have the same offset (no spacers needed) and dimensions, so you'll be good.

That 2022 wheel in the box looks nice, too.

Wanted more sidewall and went with the Cooper Discoverer Road/Trail AT. Looked at the Falken Wildpeak and the Coopers will do what I want and fit the budget better.

Also lighter by 10 pounds each.

How is the ride quality change and any pictures?

20260113_104551[1].jpgA little bumpier (VERY little and not noticeable unless you're really looking for it) than the Michelin LTX M/S all-weather tires used previously. No appreciable change in road noise. The fastest I've gone so far is only about 74mph, so we'll see if it's louder at higher speeds.

No balancing issues as others have noted with the older Cooper AT3's.

Much better in the snow (4"-5"). Haven't done any off-road yet, but these should be better than the all-season tires. At least I'll be able to air down some with the wider sidewalls as opposed the the stock 22".
