I would like to remove the crossbars from the roof rack on my 2013 Expedition but can't seem to figure out how to get them off. Can someone please give me some help? Thanks.

You might have to unscrew the side bars to widen as so you can get them out of it I'm not looking at mine right now since it's been in the shop 4/2 a month

There were some threads a while back about removing the roof rack completely. Pop a lid and back screws out at the four corners I think.

I don't want to completely remove the whole roof rack. I just want to take off the crossbars.

Like the man said, you might have to unscrew and at minimum loosen at least one of the side pieces to remove the cross pieces. Does it look that way on your Expy? I don’t know if they’re captured in there or not. I know on mine you can loosen the cross pieces and slide them forward or rear. I’d go out and look if I was within 1000 miles of mine. Maybe when I get home at 1am I can check.

It’s funny, at one point I considered building a thin aerodynamic roof rack the entire length of the roof. Having the side rails there would lock it in place. The cross bars would be in the way. The EL is so large I never needed the extra space .... yet.

Got home @ 1am last night and went out to look at my Expy rack with my flashlight. Dog next door started barking. That started dog on other side to start barking, which started dog couple houses away to start barking. It was a dog chorus.

So ... scratch the remove side bars thing. I have a 2014, no idea if yours is same. Just take the thumbscrew all the way out and use a screwdriver to urge the cross bar off the "anchor post". Then crossbar just pulls up and out. Done deal. Sorry for red herring.

To get the sliders out, probably do have to remove side bars so you can slide out the end. I'm not gonna try that. Good luck

All of our Expys with cross bars were taken off the first day home from the dealerships.

I moved mine several times due to the roof 'oil canning' when travelling 40-50 mph. I guess its the shape of the bar that acts like a wing and causes enough of a pressure delta on the roof panel to pull it up and down, making the 'booming' sound. I finally found a sweet spot.

Same here. For one, I believe it looks way better without them. And two, much easier for snow removal.
