Amazing Everytime we talk oil, and oil changes we start heading for 60 posts. The Ironic part of all these algorithms is that we've had more trouble with engine parts than ever. And by the way Mr. Sticker, I graduated from Wasamatta U University. Most prestigious college in Frostbite Falls, Minnesota! Just ask my buddy Rocky!

Two things:

1. The monitor was not reset at the last oil change, or

2. The monitor was not reset to "100%" at the last oil change. On my 2008 Mounty, I can set the 'oil life remaining' to (IIRC), 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% or 100% at any time. It could be the tech set it to 80%.

The recent oil change 500 miles ago, I reset it and as far as I know this will only go to 100% which it did.

Your 08 mountaineer oil monitoring system sounds exactly the same as my expys. Good point there the tech may have very well set it for a different percentage.

Here in New York, when Jiffy Lube changes a customer's oil, they set the change interval to 40% or the lowest interval it will go. I'm sure most franchise oil change places do the same.

They also tell you that you need a new battery, but that's another story.

I use jiffy lube for my work car, and they always reset to 100%. Now sometimes the little reminder sticker they use, will have current miles, for when next change is due, lol.

The oil life algorithm works very good for what our car goes through. 2015 lincoln navigator ecoboost which is only driven short trips with frequent cold starts. The oil has smelled like gasoline at every oil change and the oil life monitor picks up on this by reccomending oil changes at 2-3000 miles (every 6-10 months). The last change I sent it in for testing with amsoil. Test results show over 5% fuel which is terrible! The car is being checked over by ford and there is a chance it is a leaky injector ornother issue. My gut tells me it is the frequent cold starts without a chance for warming up and the fuel never burns off. Ford corporate also confirmed this can be the case when nothing mechanically is wrong.

Do you think the "oil monitor" has a sensor that detects fuel in the oil?

My 5% oil life warning illuminated on the dash last evening, March 3. After some curiosity caused math I've determined that my 2017 Expedition is warning about the 12 month oil change requirement, not 10,000 miles. 5% of 365 days is 18 days. Another 18 days will be March 21. Oil was last changed on March 21, last year. Bingo! Oil change scheduled for next week.

Only driven 5400 miles since the last oil change, not near the 10,000 mile schedule but I know the nagging started about 4500 miles into the 5000 maintenance schedule on my 2007. Never found out if it worked by days either. The Maintenance Minder on my Honda doesn't seem to be counting days as I still have 80% oil life and 9 months on the oil.

Your math is spot on!
Will be interesting if you let it go to March 21 & it pops on that day.
Do Tell ….

My 2014 always seems to be around 6000 miles (less than a year).
Interestingly, 95% of 6000 miles is pretty dang close to 5400 miles.

I wish I knew somebody that changed their oil at 3000 miles.
I'd filter it and put it in my 2003 for 3000 more miles.
:favorites37:

note: would not do that in my 2014EL

Olivy, if your Navigator had a leaky injector, you'd have a hard time doing a warm startup. Like the vehicle sitting 15-30 minutes. It would be followed by smoke billowing out the exaust, and a smell of raw fuel. It would be even worse on cold start, despite the engine needing a richer mixture. Your dealer will most likely run a codes check to see if any one cylinder is acting up. Beyond that they'll do a pressure test, and an injector leak down test. Any leakage on key off pressure test will show as a drop on their gauge. Short trips when a vehicle is cold is never good for not only oil, but the exaust system, especially the catalytic converters, as moisture never burns off. If you can, your going to need to either warm the engine up longer, or take longer trips.

The OLM is for a 1 year duration. It will go to 0%, without driving a mile. That is about 8.3% a month. 1000mi = 10% oil life. It counts engine revolutions, starts, temp and driving cycles. Yes, extended idling will speed up the % remaining life. Its just a guide, for idiot owners, who neglect oil changes. However, good luck trying to claim a warranty engine, when you been driving at 0%. You bet Ford can access all the data on oil life.

No but I think the car is aware of how many cold starts it has and how often it does not warm up. It probably calculates how much raw fuel is being dumped intonthe cylinders during warmups.

Yes the 2007 starts displaying the oil change message you as you approach 180 days (roughly 6 months) regardless of mileage.

I normally change my oil every 3,000 miles lol. I don’t think filtering used oil restores its lubricity lol.

I like having the OLM but I don't go over 5000 without changing the oil regardless what the OLM tells me.
