My 4x4 system is not working so I was playing around with the switch and left the switch in 4 low.
And drove without noticing it. Then yesterday when stopping and moving the gear would slip as if it was in neutral.
I pulled over and the transmission dip stick had black particals on it. But plenty of transmission fluid. It cured it self yesterday but today started again. Just seems to be Drive that is slipping. Any solutions?

Trans fluid is redish. Might be trans time for you. Some people try the fluid change and have been fortunate but if there are internal issues it only puts off the repair for a while.

The fluid was changed in December and was that colour to start with. Also sometimes when I engage kick down I hear a brief sqeel either from the belt or the torque converter?

Oh you're serious! I was just surprised no one noticed it was in 4lo, that's all... Might not have had anything to do with it but particles on the trans dipstick is usually a bad bad thing...

If the transfer case was in low I'm sure he would have picked up on it before way before 45mph.

Just an update, so in Auto 4x4 mode I get slip. In 4 high mode I don't get slip.
I'm going to try Lucas Oil Transmisson fix to see what happens.

When my transfer case shift motor was on the way out, it acted sort of like this. There is a shift position sensor built into the motor that can be problematic. The ECU won't know what gear the TC is in. Put your 4x4 switch back in 2wd or Awd. Disconnect the battery terminals and hold the two battery leads together for about a minute. This will reset the ECU. Give that a try before you spend any money.

Update: I checked the fluid level before setting off and it was low. So I topped up the fluid hoping that would be the end of the slipping, and also just add it now also slips on 4 HI. In my part of the world I cannot seem to find Lucas transmission fix fluid or any alternative. Driving it below 3K Rpm seems to help not slip. I think might be the torque converter.
