My wife and I just bought a 2007 Expedition with 23K miles a few weeks ago.

I haven't driven it much until today, and I have a question that I've searched for, but not really sure how explain what I mean by the issue "I think" I'm having.

OK, the best way I can describe it is, it feels weird going from second gear to first at low speeds...slowing down to a stop when the truck is first driven for the day (It was the worst at the first red light after the truck was driven for the first time today, then got better and less noticeable to non existent a few red lights later). The best way I can describe it is imagine you are towing a boat with surge brakes and you are slowing down to a stop and you feel that surge (pushing against you) if you try and stop suddenly) Kinda like something is pushing against or almost like you are towing a boat, but I'm not towing a boat or as if a car rear ended you at almost stopped speeds. Has anyone had this issue? If so what resolved it? I still have the factory warranty until November and want to get this resolved if I can. Thanks for all your help in advance!!!

Also, I didn't notice any strange noises?

Edit: I want to add, that this is happening when slowing to a stop and not accelerating.

Can you try to reproduce this by putting the vehicle in neutral and coasting while braking?

Also, clarify that this is on level road, while in DRIVE.

Is the OVERDRIVE button on?

I will try putting it in neutral tomorrow as I slow to a stop, and I'm sure when it happens it's in drive and not a lower gear. I'll also check and make sure the OD "off" button is not on, but I'd assume it's as normal as I have nothing on the gauge cluster saying OD is off. Thanks for the advice.

Again, I'm not towing anything.

Bring it to the dealer and have them reflash the computer using TSB 08-22-07
What you are describing is /was a common issue with the 07-08 Expys. Usually, the reflash takes care of the issue. Mine had the same problem and I had the reflash done and it it's been fine ever since.

I have an 08 EL. It did the same thing. From what I understand it is due to the adaptive transmission. If you hot rod it a lot it will do it. I put it into 1st gear and turned off traction control to turn donuts at the beach. I had to have the transmission reflashed. Didnt take to long and the dealer knows all about it, assuming you have an intelligent dealership. A local repair shop might not know fully about the problem.

Also it turned out to be a quart low. Now I dont have any problems with it. Drove from Alaska to Arizona in 3 1/2 days pulling a 2000lb uhaul trailer and got 16 mpg at 75 mph+.

I have an '08 EL that did the same thing a few years ago but was corrected by the reflash. Just recently though a pump and two valves went bad in the transmission and it went into limp mode and stayed In 3rd gear. Took the dealer almost two weeks to repair but luckily it was covered under the power train warranty. You can try to make it relearn the shift pattern by unhooking the battery over night then drive in the morning following the procedure to make it learn the shifts but the "bump" your feeling should be corrected by the TSB update if not done already.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

We dropped of the truck to have a door handle recall done as well as flush the coolant (I'm very hands on and could do the flush myself, but it's flipin hot outside).
The guy in the service dept seemed to know about the transmission flash and is looking to see if my Exp falls into the date range. Since the truck is out of the 3yr/36K mile warranty, it's going to cost me. I'm not sure if someone will respond to this quick enough, but what should it cost me to do the flash? I was told, it's normal rate is $105, but he'd charge me "around" $50 to do it.

Any time you can walk out of the stealership with a bill less than 100 bucks, i wouldn't question it. Usually just running a simple diagnostic costs a bill or more...

Just dropped my 08 EB off this morning for the same issue. Hopefully that is the issues/fix...

My exp looks just like yours, down to the wheel package.

I called my wife this morning and asked if she felt the surge/jerk when leaving the house and she said, oh, I don't know....
I said well baby, I'll call and remind you to pay attention in the morning, but I'm guessing it's fixed because she noticed it from before as well.

No quite under 100 bucks, but about $20 under $200. I had the coolant flushed as well as the TSB done.

That fixed my shifting issue, but I still hear kind of a grind from 3rd to 2nd if its under a load...noticed it real bad with windows down towing my boat on backroads...have to take it back I guess. Thought it may have something to do with the shift timing....oh well, drive train warranty till November 2012. Lol

jyoungky, are you sure it's 3-2 downshift not 4-3 ? Because the 4-3, 5-3 and 6-3 downshift noise issue has a TSB already, just hope you're still under warranty because it requires replacing the friction plates in the tranny = about 11-12 labor time plus parts.

TSB 09-6-1
6R75 TRANSMISSION - SQUAWK NOISE DURING POWER/FORCED DOWNSHIFT

ISSUE: "Some 2007-2008 Expedition vehicles equipped with a 6R75 transmission may exhibit a squawk type niose during hard acceleration down shifts (4-3), (5-3) and (6-3) downshifts. The noise is produced during the release of the overdrive clutch.

SERVICE PROCEDURE: Follow the Worshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01B to replace the overdrive friction plates.

Thanks for the info Matt. It's at the dealership for the next couple of days getting this fixed. On their dime nonetheless.
