Special Service Message 53683 - 2025 F-150/Expedition/Navigator/Bronco/Ranger - DTC U3012:68 Stored In The ABS Module

Some 2025 F-150/Expedition/Navigator/Bronco/Ranger vehicles may exhibit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) U3012:68 stored in the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module with a soft brake pedal following vehicle start-up with various brake system illuminated warning lamps and/or brake-related messages displayed in the instrument panel cluster (IPC). This may be due to a controller area network (CAN) communication concern within the ABS module. Replacement of the ABS module will not resolve this condition. To resolve this condition, place the vehicle in park. Disengage the park brake. Turn the vehicle off. Close all doors and liftgate/tailgate. Allow the vehicle to sit for 5 minutes to allow all vehicle modules to power down. Restart the vehicle. Verify brake functionality and clear any DTCs. Pressing unlock/lock button on the key fob, opening the doors/liftgate/tailgate or keeping the key fob within 30 ft (8 meters) of the vehicle can prevent the modules from powering down completely. Inform customers that they can continue to drive the vehicle and engineering is currently working on a solution for this condition that is expected in Q3 2025. Monitor Professional Technician System (PTS) for additional information and schedule service appointments for customers once the repair becomes available.

I had this issue just yesterday when leaving welcome to Rockville on my 25 f150. Had to be towed 100 miles home cost $479. This sucks and don’t know what to do exactly. Dealership got it going again but says if it happens again I need to have it towed to them again. Any advice would be nice. Truck has 1500 miles

Ford is restating the information originally released as SSM 53683, but this time, doing it as four Special Service Messages, with each addressing one of the previously designated vehicle lines, perhaps to improve clarity of the affected vehicles to dealerships and professional technicians -- and with the addition of: "If a U3012:68 is not present in the ABS module, this article does not apply."

I have attached below, as a PDF document, a reformatted version of the Special Service Message(s) that stresses the SSM's possibly-corrective procedure which an owner could attempt.

You may want to print and put a copy in any of the affected vehicles' glove box -- just in case you are confronted by the described symptoms while driving, and you wish to attempt the procedure to see if it restores the vehicle's drivability before calling for a tow to deliver your vehicle to the dealership, like Forum member @ozzy1king was forced to do.

If you're successful at getting the vehicle back on the road, contact your dealer for them to clear the DTC(s) and to record the incident as a Warranty Repair in OASIS, where the now-unique SSM# may be used by Ford to track vehicle-line occurrences.

If it's necessary to have the vehicle towed to the dealership for diagnosis and repair, you might wish to ask the dealership to contact the Special Service Support Center (SSSC) for authorization to provide you a long-term rental pending the availability of the permanent correction of this problem, due to the significant inconvenience and risk to your and your family's personal safety if the vehicle becomes disabled by this issue during your frequent interstate highway travel, or a comparable unique personal situation. Repeat occurrences of this issue and unique personal hardship may justify provision of a long-term rental.

It never hurts to ask.

Good luck!...

Ford has issued SSM 53874, a 2025 Expedition/Navigator-specific announcement that focusses on updating ABS Module software to a currently available latest version as the remedy for the Brake System symptoms described in this and previous Special Service Messages...

The vehicle may also exhibit any of the following symptoms: a soft brake pedal following vehicle start-up, various brake system illuminated warning lamps and/or brake-related messages displayed in the instrument panel cluster (IPC). This may be due to a controller area network (CAN) communication concern within the ABS module.
