I had lots of scrap metal from other projects sitting around for quite a while so I decided to fab up a roof rack. I got the idea Saturday night and started building on Sunday afternoon. I wish I would have started on Sat, then I think I could of had it all wrapped up... Pretty happy so far...

I started with this:

And this is how it sat about 2 hours before we called it a day:

Got it all done and final install was late last night.. It's sitting on 1/4" brackets that are lag bolted to the OE roof rails. It was to late last night for pics but this was today as I pulled in to work..

I've been considering putting together an FJ Cruiser style roof rack. It would be a single tube that runs down both sides and across the back, leaving the front open. It will cost about $100 in pre-bent and straight 2 1/4" exhaust tubing from Summit.

I prefer the basket look, but I'm just not sure that I want all that wind noise. The open front and single tube design should eliminate the wind noise. I'm just not sure that I want to spend a hundred bucks and a few hours welding right now.

I can barely hear mine with the radio off. The fairing on the front makes it nearly impossible to hear over the tires, and my Falkens are very quiet for A/T tires.

For mine, wind noise seems very low. I was able to get to about 65 on the way to work and the tires seemed to make more noise at that point. so I think 75 should not be an issue..I tried my best to line up the front air dam to the line of the windshield hoping that the sir coming off that has a smooth transition over the basket...

you guys serioulsy need to find a good miller or lincoln mig welder online and start practicing just remember to make littlle half moon shapes or c shapes back and forth. im serious welding is easy it just takes practice cause you gotta learn how to adjust voltage and speed believe me its easyier then you think. i picked it up just fine i had a welder friend who is awesome at welding teach me. first he set it up and showed me how then once you get the feel of it and find out where you are comfortable with speed you just adjust voltage per the thickness just make sure your getting good penetrations. (thats what she said, i had to say that cause the next person would have lol)

thanks everyone. I just got back from a 3K+ mile trip to colorado ( Estes park, Long peak, Rocky Mountain National park, contintal divide etc. ) and it held up great! LOl to get an idea on size i had a 13 cubic foot bag tied down to it and still could have fit another plus other gear. :rotflmao:

This was when we arrived in Loveland. To get an idea of what a 13 cubic foot bag looks like:
