Hello All,
I have a 4WD 2004 XLT Expedition. The 4WD system has a very funny problem that I cannot seem to diagnose. Here is the problem:
When moving the selector from AWD to 4HI the 4HI light on the dash blinks one time very quickly and stays off.
Shifting to 4LO and the truck goes into 4 LO and the 4LO light comes on.
Testing I have done:
4WD HI is working as I verified by running the vehicle in 4HI with all 4 tires off the ground.
In AWD the 4HI light does not blink to indicate a problem. I can manually set an ABS code by running in 2WD mode with the tires off the ground and then the 4HI light will blink constantly when AWD is selected until I clear the ABS codes.
First thing I did was to replace the shift motor thinking the encoder was bad. No help with the problem.
Next thing I did was to try a friend of mine's 4x4 control module from a 2003 Navigator with the exact same transfer case and part number on the module. Same problem.
I am starting to lean toward the TOD coil in the transfer case. Is there a software monitor in the control module that looks for a proper amount of current going into the coil? Could it be going bad and an incorrect amount of current not allowing the system to 'think' it is in 4HI.
I have been to two Ford dealers and have not been able to find a technician who knows enough about the TOD Borg Warner system to have a good discussion. They just want to start throwing parts at it like coils, transfer cases etc...
Any advice at this point will be very helpful.
