This morning while parking I opened the door to see if I backed in correctly and noticed a weird noise. It is a rythmic clacking noise that goes away soon after putting it in nuetral or park. Not immediately after, but within 2 seconds or so. I want to say i heard it faintly and intermittently in nuetral and park but nothing as much as in gear.

The A\C was off at the time.

I just had a CV joint replaced on the drivers side, I hope I don't also need one of the passengers side.

Any thoughts as to what else to look for?

TIA

Could be the thrust bearing in the fly wheel, it causes the fly wheel to move in and out from the motor a good quarter inch, if its going bad. Its a pain but pull your trans and check the flywheel for play, you may be able to pull the starter and check it but not for sure.

I have an automatic, I'm gonna crawl under it this week with a stethiscope and hunt it down.

I have that same issue on my 09 exped (work truck)...it started a little at first (every now and again) but has now gotten worse and more common. Eventually (After about 4mo it got bad enough to throw a CEL then eventually a flashing CEL)

Our mechanic diagnosed it as a loose timing belt tensioner. We are going to take it to the dealership (our mechanic in town doesn't want to tackle it). If I find out more I will report back...maybe it can help you too.

sounds exactly like the flex plate noise i had on my explorer. it was cracked in about 7 diff places and about to explode in the tranny.

but, it could be a totally different sound w/your expy...just going by what you said it sounds very close.

They never put a manual trans in a expy from the factory

update
said I would post up when my exped was fixed (gen 3 was having issues...not the gen 1)
The spring that is with the cam/cam gear that allows the cab to variably time broke. So everything was slapping around in there and causing the motor to be out of time w/itself and created some pretty horrible noises.
Got it fixed today (took a 24hr road trip to get it done for free) and it runs GREAT!!!

Hopefully that will help someone find issues w/their ride
