Just rollled over 5100 miles on my Exp Platinum. As I was accelerating up a hill at 70 MPH the vehicle made a slight humming sound as it shifted. I didn’t think anything about it and as I got off my exit and accelerated around the curve it did it again, but this time it was a loud humming, it sounded like it was coming from the passenger side, but it’s hard to pin point. When I got home an hour later, a very strong odor was coming from the back driver side tire fender well. The vehicle couldn’t be parked in the garage it was so bad. It smells like a mix of gasoline and kerosene, very strange. I took it to my local dealer and they brushed it off, changed the oil and sent me on my way. I put it up on a lift and can’t find any leaks, nothing. The smell became faint last week, but this week it’s back. Has anyone experienced anything like this or do you have a clue what this could be? Could I have 2 separate problems? Very irritating! Thanks in advance!

Could it have something to do with the rear end. Does your truck have a limited slip rear end? Had a e250 with issue's like your describing, especially the part of making the noise in the curve of road. Added some limited slip friction modifier, just a few ounces and problem went away.

Sounds like something going on in rear differential like Chris stated. If something is amiss in the rear differential, it will cause the noise your speaking of, along with smell. Why it's doing this at only 5800 miles is a mystery. Could be clearances were set up wrong during assembly, or who knows. The fact that it's intermittent, record any audio you can, and if you smell it, drive to dealer or local shop for verification. Its a Shame on such a new vehicle, but doesn't surprise me these days.
