Recently, my Motorola ma1 adapter does not work, lights up and blinks, but an error message will pop up saying that the adapter is not compatible.

I'll have to go grab my sync version, but I was messing around with the auto update feature because ford.com says I have an available update, but the radio itself says it's up to date

It has nothing to do with Sync 3 update.
I've had 2 fail the same way. You can try resetting it:
power on the MA1 adapter
Press and hold the button on the side of the MA1 adapter for up to 35 seconds. It will go through a series of blinking.
Continue to hold the button until the LED turns white.
Release the button once the LED turns white.
Go into your car settings and unpair the phone. Go into your phone Bluetooth settings and unpair the device
Re-configure the MA-1 on the phone and phone in car.
If this fails, your MA-1 is bad. Luckily mine were under warranty and Motorola replaced them.

I tried your suggestions and found some troubleshooting suggestions from the Motorola website, still not working. I get to the part where I'm holding down the reset button to get to the Bluetooth pairing, but the light turns solid red after about 4 seconds then a message pops up on the radio display, " This USB device is not supported. Please remove".
Sounds like it's dead.

Ignore the message and hold down the buttons for the full time. If not, it will not reset.
You can also plug it into a pc or laptop and follow the same procedure.
If all fails, you have a defective unit like I did.
