140k and the dreaded shudder from the torque converter. I'm going to cross my fingers and do the fluid replacement first as it seems to have worked for many, the question is should I just have the fluid changed or do the fluid flush? is there something about the flush that could make it worse as opposed to just a basic fluid change? Many thanks!

UPDATE: The opinion of my transmission guy is to do the flush. He says in his experience it usually does not make a difference, will occasionally improve it and it is possible it could make it worse. I'm at a bit of a loss of how to proceed, but am encouraged by several people in the forum who said that a fluid change fixed the problem.

Drain and refill with a new filter got rid of the shudder for me. I'd avoid the flush. First things first I'd check the level of the current fluid you have. I still wonder if a little top off might have gotten rid of the shudder I was feeling as I had to add in more fluid that I took out to be full on the dipstick.

You did not list the year, make, model and transmission type for your vehicle.

Ford does not recommend a fluid flush, although many Ford dealers sell this service - often by using an aftermarket flush machine and chemicals.

I would stick with the fluid and filter change, using the OEM filter and fluid.

My two cents.

Thank you riches and C5Coupe. Yeah, forgot to mention it's an 07 Expedition EL 4WD 6spd. And yeah you two are both in agreement of just a fluid swap and not a flush. Many thanks. Hoping for the best!

I’ve had TC issues too. Right now deciding on putting the new TC in or just ordering a used transmission from LKQ.

Flushes are BAD! On newer or lower mile vehicles or ones that have been serviced before it is usually no problem but a pan drop and filter change is safest.

The kit is like 13-19 at O'Reilly Auto Part and you can buy whatever brand fluid you wish (prob spec for MercV unless is is real old or new)
A pan drop and new fluid will stop the shudder. You can also get Dr Tranny shudder fix or add lubeguard black or green to your oil fluid.

I also have an 07 EL Eddie Bauer 4X4. 240k miles and a fluid and filter change had no effect on shudder. Tried the Lubegard instant shudder fix Friday and the shudder was instantly gone. Lubegard 19610 Instant Shudder Fixx, 2 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002JMLQU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sT.2DbV37TG5A
I've driven over a hundred miles this weekend and am blown away by the difference.
Filter and fluid change was done over a month ago.

What fluid did you install in the transmission with the fluid change? Mark 5 should have taken care of your shutter problem. There are some transmission shops that still use Dexron Mercon and everything and add like a Lube carb additive to turn it into the proper fluid. And there are some shops that just put a couple different fluids and everything with little concern for the longevity of your transmission in the future. They certainly don't care if it goes out and you have to get a rebuild cuz they hope you'll bring it to them. And, if they rebuild it they know that even with the wrong fluid it'll still last past the 12-month 12000 mile or 12 month 15000 mile warranty they give you. Let me take this chance to say that all transmission shops are absolute Crooks. I guess the words all and absolute are a little extreme but overall that's pretty much how it works. They are the worst of the worst in all aspects of car repair or service. The instant shudder Fixx is awesome though because it usually works in less than 15 minutes. It is right up there with the best of the best products that are not snake oil and actually work. Also, red Angel AC system stop leak is the best in its class also. Same with their Blue Devil radiator stop leak and pouring go stop leak. Their products are very expensive but they usually work quite well.
