Time for new plugs?

Past couple of months I have noticed my 2007 acting sluggish in between the 40-55mph range, seems to want to cut out when I give it some gas, but once I hit 55 and up it runs fine and even starting out from 0 it seems to be fine. Yesterday coming home the engine lights started blinking as I went up a hill and trying to excellerate. Engine light just blinked and then once i got through and up to 60 it stopped blinking. When my wife is along she claims she can smell gas? I have 88,000 miles, is it time for new wires and plugs?

First thing I'd is swap the plugs. At 88k the originals are done I'm sure.

plugs

Well I have an appointment Friday morning. Repair shop thought it sounded like a coil was going bad, I have already replaced two so why not a 3rd. Still would like to get new plugs and wires just to get that taken care off.

Well, not the plugs it was the coil. I had to replace 4 of them! I replaced one about a year ago and another about a month after. I sure hope that gets me another 80,000 miles before I have to replace one of those things again. Put on a new fuel filter as well for a total of $486.01.

Is there a reason the COPs don't last on these trucks? Or at least it seems that way. My 01 has 107K on the stock COPs with no issues.

I wonder the same thing. I personally believe many get replaced unnecessarily due to the PCM or diagnostic equipment identifying them as misfiring and rather than test them its easier just to replace. Due to the close proximity to ground and the deep well I would bet many just have faulty insulators (rubber boot) and or moisure trapped in the plug well and you can just replace the boots.

I have had misfires before and they were due to moisture and or faulty spark plugs.

Not saying cops don't go bad because they do but believe a high percentage are replaced unnecessarily. Regardless of its the cop, boot or moisture replacing the cop will "cure" the issue so.......

I also have concerns about the connector on these cops. To me they seem quite loose but that could just be mine.

I asked the mechanic when i picked up my Expo and he said thats just for reason the years. He replaced 3 on his truck the other day so I wouldn't think he would just replace them unless they were bad, but heck sold me 4 coils and labor so what the heck do I know!

I am not commenting on yours specifically. Just the cops reputation as a whole. And not suggesting mechanics are trying to take advantage but its just common practice to replace the cops when there is a misfire.

One would guess that heat is a big part of the equation when it comes to the coils failing! It is electrical and creates its own heat on top of engine and spark plug heat!

Just my .02! lol!

That makes sense rburch, so why haven't they figured a way to keep this from occuring and maybe they have with the new vehicles?

If they made a quality product then the money hungry shareholders wouldnt make any money!? Whats a better racquet than $85 coils and $15 plugs every 60-80,000! Sometimes i regret buying the 3v, but overall i love fords and i think they have some great ideas! Like the new 5.4 3v gives yo max torque at 1500 rpm!

I have a 99 5.4, how do I tell if the "shudder" I feel under load (ie. in OD going up an incline - say around 1900 rpms) is torque converter chatter or a misfire?
MPG is still ok (12 / 18), feels "ok" under full throttle acceleration (though not as smooth as my 2008 Z71 Suburban), and CEL is not on.
Mileage on the truck is 72k.
I don't want to replace stuff just to replace it.

Thoughts???

At 72k I would replace the plugs as routine maintenance. But then I never agreed with the 100k recommendation for plugs.
