so, i took the factory oil pump apart for fun, found something interesting...
there is a channel that runs round the pump, guessing it is some sort of pressure eq. thing, but either way, there was a large portion with blockage. not sure what the material is, almost seemed like really fine ground plastic. I am not sure what affect it would have, but i am positive it isnt supposed to be there.
first thought was deteriorated gasket, but the channel is not continuous on one side, so it is def. not a gasket channel.
Edit:
looks like it is common buildup, due to mileage/etc. Per melling, the channel is to create a presurized seal. which, if you think about it, makes sense on the suction cavities, it prevents air from getting sucked in, and losing suction. its better to lose a little pressure head than it is to break suction.
with that gunk buildup, you run the risk of sucking air, and losing pressure... I would bet it causes cold start oiling issues, when pressure is lowest on suction (due to thicker oil)_ seems the oil pressure issue is from multiple problems.
