Hey, all,

Just got my 2017 EL. It's a platinum, so it came with CCD and 22" wheels.

While I don't mind CCD, I want to be able to go on an unpaved road every once in a while, and looking at those 22" it seems like they'll get a pinch flat on the very first rock I hit.

Two questions to you all:

- What's your recommendation for rim/tire combo that would handle an occasional trip off the paved road? Don't want to go extreme with wheels, plenty of stock Expy wheels available. Looks like stock comes in 18 and 20. There are also F150 17" that should fit.. Completely lost here

- Are there any concerns with downsizing given that the truck has CCD?

Thanks!

The stock sizes are
275/55r20 for the limited (still not enough sidewall in my opinion) 275/65r18 are stock on the xlt trims.
You MIGHT be able to go 275/70r18 for a 33" tire without modification. Standard wheel offset is +44.
This will give you 7.6 inches of sidewall vs the 6" the 20s give and the 5" your 22s have.
Basically it comes down to about 33" tall x 11 wide. Use tire size calculators & converters to find your ideal tire.

I have a '16 platinum with the 275/55/20 stock wheel. Currently running a 285/55/20 with BFG KO2 tires, without issue. I want to bump up to a 305, and am considering dropping to an 18 inch wheel. that would put me at 305/65/18/ lots of sidewall. I would suggest at least going don to a 20 and upping the tire size for more sidewall. \but the 18" is the best option.

All things being equal, I run my 20's on rough gravel without issue, but that comes down to tire choice more than wheel size. Just my opinion.

I have a 17 Platinum and go down dirt roads often. The 22" wheels/tires are fine.

18s since you won’t be lifting the truck.

Remember if you get F150 wheels you will need to shave the rear (pretty sure it is the rear) threaded axle shafts, run a 1/2” spacer, modify the center cap, or use no center cap.

I would really like a set of 1st gen Raptor wheels but will likely just slap some new rubber on the 18s I have.

'16 Platinum, had stock 22" with Pirelli Scorpion Tires, and I ********** those in a heart beat. Traded on craigslist for a set of F150 Sport rims, 20", and put BFG KO2 tread on them. I drive up and down the boat ramp, dirt trails in AZ, and occasional snow and mud. 10 out of 10. I know the BFG's are a little pricey but you know what they say, pennywise, pound foolish. Oh, I did have to cut about a 1/2" off the rear axle threads to keep the center caps of the rims. 20171226_172056.jpg 20180303_214319.jpg

How did you go about cutting the axle shafts?

Thanks, all!

What tires do you have?
Just factory, but when I swap them out I'll probably go with Toyo Open Country 33s and the 3/2 lift. I'd rather go with Coopers, but they've lost their way price wise IMO.

Just to make sure we're apples to apples, I didn't cut the shaft, just the threads on the very end of them that if I remember correctly, are used to install the brake disc nut.
I put the rims on and that's when the center cap popped out. I first tried to use a dremel and remove some of the center cap from the inside to make it fit, but then I ended up marking the threads and cutting. When I cut them, I put a nut on the threads and then took a 4" grinding wheel to it, so that I wouldn't marr up the rest of the threads. Then when I was done cutting I took the nut off to make sure they were still good.

Sounds like you cut the rear Halfshaft/axle threads. As long as you didn't cut the fronts, you'll probably be fine.

Yes, I was referring to the outer threaded end of the axles so we are talking the same.
Are you happy with the outcome??
Looking to go with 1st gen Raptor wheels and would prefer saving $100 or so and not buy spacers.

Yes, completely happy. No issues as of yet, been that way for a year.

Hey, for any of you wondering, traded in my 2017 Expy yesterday with 80k on it.

I had bought 18" wheels off a King Ranch F150 when my Expy had 25K miles on it. As mentioned above, rear axle was popping through the endcaps, so I just had them without endcaps all this time, I'm all for taking utility over looks. Last year put some beefy 275/65R18 Falken Wildpeaks on it.

Never had any issues. Initially truck seemed little more wobbly, but I got used to it very quickly. The comfort, stability on dirt roads, knowing that I don't have to worry about rocks or curbs anymore was great.
