Torque Converter/Transmission ???

Hi Everyone. New to this site. My wife's 07 Expedition EL went to the shop today for some of the clunking or surging described here. The mechanic called her back and told her we needed to buy a torque converter at $7500 - just for the part. Another $2K for labor. Is this for real? I not exactly mechanically inclined, but that doesn't seem right.

Ok, so it turns out the wife wrote the quote as $7787 and is should have been $717.87. Decimals will get you everytime. lol

I had vibration at highway speed and was thinking it was a bad tire then I got the tell-tale growl of a bad wheel bearing.

So I took it to my local Ford Dealer and they say its not the wheel bearing, but all 4 ball joints are shot and won't pass PA inspection. They couldn't duplicate the growl and say the wheel bearings are fine.

I haven't had it on the highway but hopefully this will solve the vibration issue.

07 tranny shuddering

My 07 has the same problem described by ptmares. 105000 and it shudders at mid rpm going up hills almost like it doesn't know whether it wants to be in 5 or 6th. I found disengaging o/d alleviates it. So does gassing it, which causes downshift of course. Dealer tells me it's likely torque converter. Has anyone found draining and refilling the fluid alleviates the problem? I don't think this tranny has ever been serviced. My brothers 06 does the same thing, but I believe his is a 5 spd o/d.

I would start with the fluid change. FoMoCo transmissions seem to be finicky about fresh fluid. I've found that I get some hard shifts and vibration with old fluid, mostly resolved by fresh.

My vibration issues noted before seem to be solved by fluid replacement. I had a "bulkhead plug" seal go and the fluid was replaced at 130k (regular maintenace) and then again at 145k with the plug repair. No vibration or shifting issues now.

I am cautiously optimistic! One week after transmission fluid change, no issues. Also had my plugs changed, which of course was overdue and was a job due to the terrible spark plug design on this model. 5 of the 8 broke. New plugs and it is markedly smoother at idle. Preventative maintenance - or in my case, reactive maintenance!

I had the same problem last year on my 07 100K Expedition. The car would work fine except at low RPM 50/55k especially while re-accelerating slowly. Ford did a tune up and replace the plugs and one bad coil. The problem was fixed.

About 9 months later it is happening again. I moved so took it to a new Ford garage who insisted that no coil was bad or causing the issue. The replaced the Torque converter instead and $1800 later the problem seemed fixed. 2/3 weeks later the problem is coming back, barely noticeable to worse and worse. I dropped the car at Ford again but wondering if the Torque Converter needed replacing and maybe I paid $1800 for nothing... they did top up the tran fluid when replacing the torque converter. Maybe this is what made it better for a few weeks.

Ford dealership said the torque converter that they replaced went bad and should be replaced after just 2/3 weeks!!!!

They told me that it could be a faulty part or something caused the part to go bad...

Anyone thinks that they are not sure why they are talking about!
