Our 2012 Expedition King Ranch is having a weird shifting issue. Had the recall performed concerning the sudden possible downshift to first, but it still clunks when approaching a hill. Seems like it has trouble downshifting out of overdrive. You can step on it a bit, and it will downshift fine, but allowing it to downshift on its own brings about this problem. Other than that it works fine. Has anyone else had this? It has the 5.4, and 152,00 miles. Thanks, Mike.

Has the trans fluid / filter been changed recently?

I've read that solenoids and other components can act funny if the fluid is old and contaminated, hence why I did mine last weekend (at 132,000 miles). Now the transmission feels a lot smoother overall.

A buddy of mine had a Grand Marquis with an extended warranty from one of those warranty resellers. At some point his torque converter started going. The company told him to perform a trans fluid change first before they would pay for any repairs, as their procedures indicated old fluid to be the main cause of transmissions "acting up". If the problem persisted, they would authorize and pay for repairs.
