My 03 expo 4x4 has 200,000 miles. I feel a shudder/vibration like you are going over some crates in the road when it ships up at 45+ and when you have to down shift hard like you are needing to pass someone. I have heard changes the transmission fluid and filter can fix this problem. I don't know when the last time or if its ever been changed. Any advice is appreciated.

I just figured since this is a specific transmission section, a transmission question should be posted in that section. :sorrysign:

What is the best transmission fluid to use when I drop the pan and change the filter?

I had a 97 Crown Vic that did this as well as an 89. Myself I never did anything to them and it never did anything more than the occasion shudder. I believe it was actually the torque converter which caused it on my old crowns... at least according to the friendly people over at crownvic.net

But if I remember correctly some people had success with just adding some friction modifier.

Yeah mind is occasionally right now too. Called and I can get the filter and basket for $20 and it list Mercon V 5.5-6.5 quarts. Would it be worth replacing the filter or cause more harm than good?

I've heard if its never been touched in 100+k to leave it alone but I have done it on high mileage untouched trans before with no issues...

Im not sure about the trans in these rigs but I know on the old AOD, Ford used two bolts to attach the filter and if you over torque them it would not shift out of first gear...

If you change the fluid be sure to clean the gunk from the pan.

I've heard the same thing. After 100k on our Mountaineer I just replaced the filter and topped off the fluid. I didn't flush it. But I never had any issues with it.

no...but i'm guessing you initially put it in engine/performance and then saw transmission and therefore requested the thread be deleted from engine and created it in transmission...wrong? not per say...more effecient in category selection

I always heard that too because your tranny needs that grit to keep it from slipping. But I also hear people say change fluid and fiilter and it fixed the shudder.. Decisions.. Decisions..

I would say try it. Just dropping the pan to change the filter and fluid you are actually only changing out about half of the fluid(whats actually in the pan). Now doing a flush at a shop would result in a complete change of fluid in the trans and torque converter.
