I have a 98 XLT 4WD and my T-case is shot due to the previous owner running it dry, I'm attempting to replace it and I had a few questions.

1. Can I remove it without messing with the torsion bars?

2. If not, what all is involved with the torsion bars to make room for the T case to come out?

3. Is there anyway I can convert it to 2wd without installing a 2wd transmission?

I know they're kinda stupid questions but I'm hopin for a lucky break, thanks.

frito-bandito - did you ever get your Transfer Case removed and replaced? If so, did you end up removing the torsion bars. I'm also interested if you did this without removing the exhaust.

I am about to lookup the procedure in the FSM, but I've heard from many people that did not follow the FSM procedure and saved themselves a little time and effort.

I have to replace the transfer case in my 1998 EB 5.4 soon as it had a leak in it that caused it to run dry. I only drive it a couple of times a month and this is not what I was hoping to have to do, but better to get it done before the weather gets too cold and snowy. I want to be able to use it in the snow this winter.
