My best guess: I have had a significant vibration that was mostly solved by swapping out the front differential. I had a used transmission installed a few years ago and a selling point was the eddie bauer from 98 which was hinted as a upgrade for my 2001 xlt. I now have 2wd but not on my selector and this what I suspect to be causing my issues. I have found that in those which had 2wd there was a vacuum tube which disengaged the front differential when in 2wd, and not in mine and leading to my problem. The problem with that is if the front wheels are turning then they are driving the front drive shaft against the transfer case when it is not wanting it to be turning. This friction I believe is the cause of my problem.

I am pursuing this as my problem after being told that it is the right part for my vehicle. I have also been told I am supposed to have a limited slip rear end which I was certain was an open differential especially when only one wheel spun in the rain when I figured out I had one wheel drive. It will switch to 4h and a4wd. but not 4L because there are not enough positions on my selector. I only have selections for a4wd 4h, 4L. so - in a4wd its in 2wd, and 4h is a4wd, and 4L is 4h.

I have found that the a4wd functions when a rear wheel of the open differential rotates then it engages the front wheels. I went to ford and from my vin number it is supposed to have a limited slip rear end. I had to fix the rear pinion seal and had the rear cover off and that is an open differential with the three spider gears and an open middle. I thought I knew what an open differential was now I dont know what I know anymore. The previous owner must have put an open one in instead of rebuilding it?

Mostly posting to help clear up facts of how these drive lines work and if anyone has a for sure knowledge of this system it would be helpful but I am driving fine for now and not really urgent.

My transfer case has 4406 on it. That is consistent with the case number I got from the dealership from what i can tell. their part number is XL147A195AD. There is also a XL180 on my current one which may be different from the one I need. I am going to be sure to have the right one to do this swap because its going to be among the most difficult I have ever done. The tag does not have a comparable number. the XL180 and 4406 are on there separated with spaces.

The rear differential may very well be incorrect also but the transfer case is the most certainly incorrect thing I can find that I imagine cause the bad front differential.
